Tropical Storm Helene The hurricane rapidly strengthened and moved toward Florida on Wednesday morning, where it was expected to make landfall in the United States, becoming the strongest storm to hit the United States in more than a year.
“The storm is expected to rapidly intensify over the eastern Gulf of Mexico and become a major hurricane on Thursday,” the latest forecast said.
As Hurricane Helene strengthens, it is expected to develop into a large, sprawling system that poses a significant threat to Florida and much of the southeastern U.S. Its size and intensity will bring widespread impacts, including strong winds, heavy rains, and dangerous storm surges across the region.
For the Florida Panhandle, a popular tourist destination, Helene’s arrival could severely disrupt travel plans in coastal towns such as Destin, Panama City Beach and Pensacola. The storm, which is currently churning in the Gulf of Mexico with sustained winds of 120 mph, is expected to make landfall within 48 hours and trigger mass evacuations.
Some airlines accept exemptions
As the storm approached, major U.S. airlines offered travel waivers to passengers planning to fly to or from the affected areas. The waivers allow passengers to rebook their flights without paying a fare difference, providing some flexibility for passengers whose plans were affected.
American Airlines Travel warnings have been issued for 16 airports in Florida, Mexico, Alabama and the Cayman Islands, but no exemptions have been issued for travelers yet. Delta Air Lines Notices covering multiple Florida airports have been issued. The airline is offering waivers to airports in Cancun, Daytona Beach, Panama City, Key West and other destinations affected by the storm. Delta’s waiver runs from September 25 to September 27.
JetBlue It is also offering discounted fares on flights in and out of Florida and Mexico, allowing passengers to adjust travel plans before October 2 at no additional cost. Air Canada A waiver was also obtained for a flight to Cancun on September 24.
southwest For travel to Cancun on September 24 and September 25, a free ticket offer is available, allowing ticket changes within 14 days of the original travel date with no difference in fare. United Airlines Waive fees for travel through Panama City, Key West, Jacksonville, Orlando, Pensacola, Fort Myers, Sarasota and Tampa through Sept. 27. United will waive change fees and fare differences for new flights through Oct. 4.
Tourism, travel and business affected

The Port of Tampa Bay is “working with the National Weather Service, the U.S. Coast Guard, and state and local partners to monitor the potential impacts of Hurricane Helene in the Gulf of Mexico.”
As Hurricane Helene approaches, storm surge and flooding are expected in the region, with the tourism industry facing both immediate losses and possible long-term damage to critical infrastructure.
