Ford Mustang range expands, CEO vows ‘no more boring products’

talking automotive news At the Detroit Auto Show, executive chairman Bill Ford, the great-grandson of founder Henry Ford, elaborated on the importance of not only keeping the Mustang brand alive, but also keeping it relevant.

“The Mustang means a lot to me,” Mr. Ford told the publication.

“I will never let the Mustang go. As long as I’m a part of Ford, it’ll always be a part of Ford, so we work very hard to keep it fresh and relevant.

“We’re going to push the limits of the Mustang for as long as we can, and there’s really no limit.”

Last year, four sources reportedly revealed automotive news Ford previewed a four-door “coupe” and a step-up version of the Baja Mustang at a dealer meeting in Las Vegas that Mr. Ford also attended.

The long-rumored four-door coupe reportedly bears the Mach 4 nameplate.

The session also included a “high-performance” V8 Mustang convertible with a manual transmission – similar to the Shelby GT350 and GT500 – as well as a revised EcoBoost model, which was later previewed by RTR last week.

When asked about the possibility of producing the four models, Mr. Ford refused to rule out any becoming part of the Mustang lineup.

“There are all kinds of possibilities,” Chairman Ford said.

“I won’t reveal where we’re going next, but whatever we do, it’s going to be true to the brand because it has to be.”

Ford’s comments came on the same day that Ford CEO Jim Farley reiterated the automaker’s pledge not to be bored.

Mr Farley is reported to have said: ‘We don’t make shampoo’ automotive news. “Ford’s first rule: Don’t make boring products.

“Our industry is in the midst of disruption. But one thing remains true: Great products always win.”

He was backed by Jim Baumbick, Ford’s vice president of advanced product development, who said Mr Farley had driven the brand’s approach to the vehicles it made and didn’t make.

“We’re not trying to make a toaster on wheels,” Mr. Baumbick said. “We’re not just trying to produce merchandise. It’s all about emotion.”

Mr. Farley became Ford CEO in October 2020 and has held various positions at the company since joining in 2007.

Performance-focused models introduced during his tenure included the twin-turbo V6-powered Ranger Raptor, Bronco Raptor, Mustang Mach-E Rally, Maverick Lobo and the Mustang Dark Horse and GTD.

The Mustang GTD recently became the first American production car to lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife in under seven minutes.
