Ford’s electric Mustang Mach-E outsells gas Mustang

  • Ford Mustang sports car sales hit a record low, totaling just 44,003 units in 2024.
  • The Mustang Mach-E electric crossover outsold its namesake sports car by 7,700 units.
  • Ford’s sales of electric and hybrid vehicles are surging, but growth in gasoline-powered vehicles has all but stalled.

The Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro are now long out of production, leaving the Ford Mustang as the last true muscle car. You’d think this would send Mustang sales through the roof. After all, it’s the only game in town right now. Instead, pony cars just had their worst sales year once.

What’s more, the all-electric Mustang Mach-E SUV has outsold the classic sports car and is officially the best-selling car with “Mustang” in its name—even though purists will argue that it’s not a real Mustang.

Mustang sales have been a rollercoaster ride over the past few years, rather than a fun, exciting ride. Back in 2022, Ford’s muscle car hit rock bottom, with sales of just 47,566 units. It easily beat the Camaro but fell behind the then-aging Dodge Challenger. In 2023, Ford regained the muscle car sales crown with sales of 48,605 units. Now, things are taking a sharp turn in the wrong direction.

For the whole of 2024, Ford Mustang sports car sales were only 44,003 units, a decrease of 9.5% from the previous year. To put it bluntly, the two worst sales years in Mustang history both occurred in the past three years. Ford hasn’t revealed any firm plans to reverse this decline, but they’ll need to act quickly if they want to maintain the Mustang’s legacy.

Mach-E upgrade

As Motor1 rightly points out, the fourth quarter is a big deal for the Ford Bronco, and it’s looking a lot like the last quarter for new Chevrolet Camaro sales. That might be a problem, but for now, the Mustang Mach-E electric crossover is helping the brand turn a profit.

In 2023, Ford sold 40,771 Mach-Es. Fast forward to 2024, and sales jumped 26.9% to 51,745 units. Generous dealer incentives may have played a role, but it’s still an impressive feat. The Mach-E’s success even outpaced other Ford workhorses such as the Ranger (46,205 units sold, up 42.9%) and the F-150 Lightning (33,510 units sold, up 38.7%). It also outsold all Lincoln models. No matter how you feel about the Mach-E’s Mustang nameplate, growing sales are the source of Ford’s success.

Lineup Highlights

The Mach-E isn’t the only Ford model on the rise. The Explorer continued to be the best-selling three-row SUV in the United States, with 194,094 units sold, a modest but solid increase of 3.9% over 2023. The rugged Bronco sold 109,172 units (up 3.3%), while the Maverick pickup truck performed well, selling an impressive 131,142 units, up 39.4%.

Sales of electric and hybrid vehicles saw the largest year-over-year growth among all its models. Electric vehicles grew 34.8%, hybrids (Ford and Lincoln combined) grew by 40%, and internal combustion engine vehicles (Ford and Lincoln combined) grew by just 0.2%.
