- Even at 132,800 yuan or $18,300, the flagship version seems cheap.
- The cabin has a digital instrument cluster, a head-up display and a large infotainment screen.
- The SUV can travel 120 kilometers on electric power alone.
It’s no secret that China’s new electric cars and plug-in hybrids are much cheaper than their Western alternatives in the United States. However, the new Geely Galaxy Starship 7 seems to be particularly good value for money, with a starting price of 99,800 yuan, or about $13,700.

This SUV is the latest model in the Geely Galaxy series and is equipped with an AI new energy architecture. It’s 4,740 mm (186.6 inches) long, 1,905 mm (75 inches) wide, and 1,685 mm (66.3 inches) tall, which means it’s roughly the same size as the Honda CR-V. All versions come with Geely’s NordThor EM-I super hybrid system, but customers can choose from two different battery sizes.

The hybrid system combines a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated ICE engine with an electric motor and an 8.05 kWh or 19.09 kWh battery pack. Geely’s 1.5-liter engine produces 110 hp and 100 lb-ft (136 Nm) of torque on its own, while the electric motor adds 215 hp and 193 lb-ft (262 Nm) of torque. Under China’s generous test cycle, the SUV can travel 1,420 kilometers (882 miles) on a single tank, or 55 kilometers (34 miles) and 74.5 miles (120 kilometers) on electric power alone, depending on the size of the battery pack .

Visually, Starship 7 sports a set of slim LED headlights and a full-width light bar. Like many other new-age cars and SUVs, it doesn’t have a traditional front grille, while the rear gets simple LED taillights and a roof spoiler. It’s all pretty bland, but considering the starting price, it’s unreasonable to expect a particularly outlandish design.
While it’s hard to tell based on these pictures alone, Geely seems to have done a good job of making the cabin feel luxurious. We can see premium trim on the dashboard, transmission tunnel, door panels and seats, as well as a neat two-spoke steering wheel. There’s also a 10.2-inch digital instrument cluster, a 13.8-inch head-up display, and a 14.6-inch infotainment display. High-end models are also equipped with 14-point massage seats with heating and ventilation functions, a 16-speaker Flyme Sound sound system and a 50W wireless charger.
The entry-level Starship 7 Sailing Edition starts at 99,800 yuan ($13,700). Other versions on offer include Discovery Edition (109,800 yuan/$15,100), Sailing+ Edition (112,800 yuan/$15,500), Discovery+ Edition (122,800 yuan/$16,900) and Flagship Pilot Edition (132,800 yuan/$18,300).
