Shortly after President Trump announced 25% tariffs on U.S. auto imports, GM has revealed it would increase production of light trucks at its assembly plant in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

The automaker has not yet promoted its plans, but informed employees on site in Indiana on Thursday’s move. The plant currently handles production of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, but GM also makes trucks in Mexico and Canada. Indeed, in Mexico and Canada, about half of all group pickup truck production.

To boost Indiana output, the plant will be offline between April 22 and 25 as it implements several changes. An unnamed source said in a speech to Reuters that hundreds of temporary workers would be hired.

In addition, Rich Letoruneau, president of the local United Auto Workers Union, added that 225-250 full-time jobs will be added. GM also added daily and weekend overtime and increased assembly line speeds, allowing 9-10 cars per hour to be produced.

GM hasn’t said how many trucks will be built at the Fort Wayne factory in response to Trump’s tariffs.

“GM will make operational adjustments at the Fort Wayne Conference, including hiring temporary employees to support current manufacturing and business needs,” the company said. “We are constantly updating and revising production plans as part of our standard process to evaluate and align to manage vehicle inventory.”

Reuters reported that the Fort Wayne plant currently employs 4,149 workers in three shifts.

GM boss Mary Barra has been considering promoting production in the United States for some time. In January, when the Trump administration’s then-circulating tariffs could prompt it to increase truck production.
