- The Cadillac Lyriq EV has been named the best luxury car above €70,000 in Germany’s 2025 Car of the Year (GCOTY) competition.
- The winners in the other four categories were from European brands.
- The judges must now decide whether the Lyriq deserves the overall title, beating the Citroën C3, BMW 5 Series, Audi Q6 e-tron and Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid.
The Cadillac Lyriq’s electric powertrain and sharp styling have not only won new fans in the United States, but also given the SUV a chance to win in the prestigious German Car of the Year (GCOTY) competition.

The 40 judges who evaluated GCOTY 2025 entries rated the Lyriq as the best luxury car above €70,000 ($76,000), making it the only American car with a chance to win the overall title. The results will be revealed on November 13, when the 2024 winner, the Volkswagen ID.7 electric sedan, will have to give up its throne.

But Lyriq still has a lot of work to do if it wants to achieve outright victory. The other four category winners were the Citroën e-C3/C3, best compact car under €35,000 ($38,000); the BMW 5-Series/i5, best premium car under €70,000; and the Audi Q6/ GCOTY Best New Energy Car SQ6 e-tron and Best Performance Car Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid.

You may have noticed that with the exception of the Lyriq, every car comes from Europe, with three of them being German. Maybe you’re not surprised by this, assuming that proud Germans might favor their own industry. But looking at the list of previous winners, it can be seen that the judges are open-minded towards new cars.
While the ID.7 wins in 2024, the MG3, Kia EV9 and Hyundai Ioniq 6 win in the Compact, Luxury and New Energy categories, while the Genesis GV60, Range Rover and Ferrari 296 win in 2023, the year the Volkswagen ID .Buzz takes home the gold. The two overall champions in 2022 and 2021 are both from the Far East: Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Honda’s E.
The Lyric was a finalist in the utility category along with the Genesis GV60 and Kia EV6 in the 2023 North American Car and Truck of the Year (NACTOY) competition, but lost out to Kia in the final selection.
