GM brake fluid warning light issue: 488,000 vehicles

Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC drivers will not be warned if the brake fluid level is low.

— A General Motors brake fluid warning light problem led to the recall of about 488,000 vehicles because drivers are not warned if the brake fluid level is too low.

The red brake warning light is called a “warning light” and appears when too much brake fluid is being lost.

GM is recalling these vehicles because if the brake fluid warning light does not illuminate, the driver may lose the ability to brake.

A GM engineer discovered the problem in April while performing a mandatory brake fluid leak test, and the brake fluid warning light did not illuminate at the time.

The investigation found that the electronic brake control module (eBCM) software did not match the eBCM calibration issued to the vehicle by the assembly plant, resulting in the system being unable to detect and warn of brake fluid leaks.

The automaker is not aware of any accidents or injuries.

A total of approximately 38,390 GM vehicles are being recalled in Canada.

GM’s brake fluid warning light recall letter should be mailed on October 28, 2024.

GM said it will update the software at dealerships, but if the vehicle is capable of receiving over-the-air software updates, a dealer appointment may not be necessary.

GMC customers can call 800-462-8782, Chevrolet customers can call 800-222-1020 and Cadillac owners can call 800-458-8006.

GM’s recall number for this time is N242447990.
