While other companies appear to be adjusting their EV visions, GMC is going full steam ahead with its electric truck lineup

- GMC believes it will surpass its competitors and become a leader in the electric pickup truck space.
- The new Sierra EV is expected to outsell the Chevrolet Silverado EV and Tesla Cybertruck.
- GMC plans to introduce more affordable Sierra EV and Denali models soon.
While other manufacturers appear to be abandoning their electric vehicle plans, GMC apparently wants to go on the offensive as the company aims to become the leader in all-electric truck sales in the U.S. That’s according to Duncan Aldred, GMC’s global vice president, who expects the new Sierra EV to outperform competition from Ford, Tesla, and Rivian.
The GMC Sierra EV is just beginning to roll out to customers, and its competitors, including its sister model, the Chevrolet Silverado EV, are already way ahead, but GMC thinks the Sierra’s premium positioning is enough to stand out from its Chevy sibling.

The GMC Sierra EV has fancier materials, a larger screen, and some more advanced features like Super Cruise and Crab Mode, but both the Silverado and Sierra EV have an EPA-rated range of 440 miles (708 km) and the same power output of 753 horsepower and 785 pound-feet of torque.
In addition to GM’s internal competition, the Tesla Cybertruck, which was a sales star in the second quarter, also poses a threat to GM. However, despite the similar prices of the two vehicles, GMC does not expect buyers to be torn between the Cybertruck and the Sierra EV.
Working with American Financial ChannelAldred said internal data shows that 70% of Cybertruck orders are from existing Tesla owners. In contrast, about 80% of Sierra EV reservations are not GMC owners, which means the EV truck is attracting a new customer base.
GMC hasn’t said when it expects to become the market leader, but they expect sales to increase with the upcoming launch of a lower-priced Sierra EV. However, the electric vehicle market has slowed significantly, with Ford even delaying the launch of its next electric truck from a planned 2025 to 2027. Meanwhile, sales of GMC’s own Hummer electric pickup have been slow to pick up.
To counter this, GMC plans to expand the Sierra EV’s appeal even faster than it did the Hummer EV. Currently, only the $100,000 Sierra EV “Edition 1” model has been delivered, but the company expects to quickly launch and increase production of the lower-priced AT4 off-roader and entry-level Elevation model next year, with the higher-spec Denali model arriving in the fourth quarter of 2025.
