Hatchback sales in India fell 22.92% in August 2024 – Maruti WagonR leads the segment
Having reviewed the sales of SUVs and sedans in August 2024, here is the sales of hatchbacks. The hatchback market in India declined significantly in August 2024, with total sales falling to 83,129 units, a decline of 22.92% from 1,07,844 units sold in August 2023. Despite the overall decline, some models still achieved a small growth, while others faced major challenges, reflecting the change in consumer preferences.
Hatchback sales in August 2024 – Maruti WagonR ranks first
In August 2024, Maruti WagonR emerged as the best-selling hatchback with sales of 16,450 units, a year-on-year growth of 5.60%. Compared to the 15,578 units sold in August 2023, WagonR increased by 872 units and captured a dominant share of 19.79% in the entire hatchback market.
Maruti Swift, which had been performing steadily, saw a sharp decline in sales of 31.14% year-on-year. Swift sold 12,844 units in August 2024, down 5,809 units from 18,653 units in August 2023. Despite the decline in sales, Swift still holds a 15.45% market share. Similarly, Maruti Baleno sales fell 32.57% year-on-year, with sales falling to 12,485 units in August 2024, down 6,031 units from August 2023. Baleno’s market share is 15.02%, indicating a significant drop in demand.
Another popular model, the Maruti Alto, saw its sales fall by 11.01%. The Alto sold 8,546 units in August 2024, 1,057 units less than the previous year, and captured 10.28% of the hatchback market. The decline was even greater for the Hyundai i10 NIOS, which saw its sales fall by 26.57% year-on-year. The NIOS sold 5,365 units in August 2024, 1,941 units less than the 7,306 units sold in August 2023, and its market share fell to 6.45%.
Hyundai i20 sales remained stable with 4,913 units sold in August 2024, up 0.35% year-on-year compared to 4,896 units sold in August 2023. The i20 holds 5.91% of the hatchback market. Tata Tiago (including its electric model (EV)) was one of the biggest decliners in the segment with a 49.98% drop in sales. Tiago/EV sold 4,733 units in August 2024, down 4,730 units from 9,463 units sold in August 2023, and captured 5.69% of the market share.
Toyota Glanza and Maruti Celerio sales decline
Toyota Glanza sales fell 6.24% year-on-year, with 4,624 units sold in August 2024, 308 units less than 4,932 units sold in August 2023. Glanza holds a 5.56% share in the hatchback segment. Maruti Celerio also experienced a decline of 21.22%, with 3,181 units sold in August 2024, 857 units less than in August 2023. Celerio’s market share is 3.83%.
Tata Altroz was one of the biggest decliners in the segment, with sales down 61.27% year-on-year. Altroz sold 3,031 units in August 2024, 4,794 units less than in August 2023, accounting for 3.65% of the market share. However, Maruti Ignis sales grew slightly by 3.83% year-on-year, with sales reaching 2,464 units in August 2024, 91 units more than 2,373 units in August 2023. Ignis gained 2.96% market share.
MG Comet EV and Citroen C3 achieve strong growth
The MG Comet EV grew 68.97% year-on-year, with sales rising to 1,100 units in August 2024, an increase of 449 units from August 2023. The Comet EV captured 1.32% of the market share. The Citroen C3 also achieved strong growth, with sales increasing 102.80% year-on-year. The C3 sold 507 units in August 2024, an increase of 257 units from August 2023, and captured 0.61% of the market share.
On the other hand, the Citroen eC3 EV saw a sharp drop of 44.65% in sales, with sales falling from 271 units in August 2023 to 150 units in August 2024, a decrease of 121 units. The Renault Kwid also struggled, with sales falling 28.20% year-on-year. The Kwid sold 634 units in August 2024, a decrease of 249 units compared to August 2023.
