The lawsuits focus on a defective valve seal in certain Mazda models that causes the engines to consume too much oil. Although the defect did not directly cause engine damage, many people claim that they incurred extra expenses due to frequent oil changes.

Financial details about the settlement have not been disclosed, but here’s what we do know. Affected class members will receive several forms of compensation. This includes replacement of defective valve stem seals, reimbursement of out-of-pocket expenses associated with excessive replacement or refueling, and an extension of the Limited Powertrain Warranty from 60 months/60,000 miles to 84 months/84,000 miles. This extended warranty coverage is intended to provide additional peace of mind to owners who are dealing with the inconvenience of the defect.

Anyone who owns or leases one of the applicable models and has the “Low Engine Oil Level” warning illuminated on the instrument panel before the regular oil change interval of 7,500 miles or one year can schedule a valve stem seal repair at a Mazda dealer. Even if the warning light is not currently on, if the dealer has had to refill the oil before due to low oil level, the repair can still be performed. Mazda will also replace the valve stem seals if the vehicle fails a free excessive oil consumption test.
