Hello Michael: Rivian Teases KITT Makeover Coming in October

Rivian appears to be teasing a Knight-themed software update

  • Rivian has released a new teaser video showing off an apparent R1T or R1S in KITT guise.
  • This clip was released on the 42ndND Anniversary of the first episode of Knight Rider.
  • We’ll know more in October, but you might want to keep your Michael Knight fantasies in check.

Rivian has released a mysterious trailer worthy of Knight Industries 2000, and kids won’t be the only ones dressing up for Halloween. Better known as KITT, starring the Pontiac Firebird knight and has become one of the most recognizable cars in Hollywood.

As you can see in the 15-second clip, a leather-clad Michael Knight walks into a dark set and is greeted by the familiar red light that represents KITT. It’s accompanied by a distinct hissing sound you might remember from your childhood.

KITT then turns on the lights, revealing that it is now a Rivian. The video ends quickly, but we can see that the model has a classic black look along with black badges.

Rivian didn’t say much at this point, but said “keep the scanner on you.” New adventures are coming this October. “

While the theory is vague, fans are undoubtedly hoping for a KITT-themed software update that adds moving red lights on the bars that connect to the headlights. However, this seems unlikely, as many laws state that “a lighting device or reflector, when installed on or near the front of a motor vehicle…shall not display any color other than white, yellow, or amber.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean there won’t be other KITT-themed goodies coming soon. It’s also possible that this is just a fun promotion and we shouldn’t read too much into it. Regardless, one social media commenter pointed out that the trailer was released on the 42ndND Anniversary of the first episode of “Knight Rider” airing on September 26, 1982.
