Hero-Harley extends partnership, launches new 440cc bike

Expanding their alliance, Hero MotoCorp and Harley-Davidson are developing a new motorcycle for the Indian market, which will also be exported to international markets, an exchange filing by the company on December 27 revealed. The Hero-Harley partnership will also launch a new variant of the X440 for the domestic market. The two companies first joined forces nearly five years ago in 2020, subsequently launching the Harley-Davidson X440 and Hero Mavrick 440.

The exchange files for Hero MotoCorp are as follows: “This expansion of the existing collaboration between Hero and Harley-Davidson, which has been in place since October 2020, will expand the X440 motorcycle into new models and develop and build a new motorcycle.” The Harley-Davidson X440 is the first co-developed product and is manufactured locally at Hero’s Neemrana plant and is priced at Rs 2.80 lakh (ex-showroom).

Similarly, Hero MotoCorp launched its first co-developed open-top motorcycle, the Mavrick 440. It is based on the X440 platform and is the brand’s first large motorcycle in the middleweight segment. Recently, it also launched two new quarter-liter (250cc) motorcycles, namely the Xtreme 250R and the Karizma XMR 250.

Niranjan Gupta, CEO, Hero MotoCorp It had earlier said the company was targeting the high-end segment of electric vehicles and internal combustion engine vehicles. This was also confirmed by Hero during its September quarter earnings call, when the company announced that it would shift focus to building a premium product portfolio and launch multiple new models in the next 6 months. Currently, Hero owns a number of high-end brands, including Vida, Harley, Mavrick, Karizma, Xpulse and Xtreme.

Hero is also developing its first electric motorcycle and plans to produce at least six e-bikes under the Vida brand. Additionally, it has partnered with Zero Motors to develop four more e-bikes from 2025-26. The American electric vehicle brand will partner with Hero MotoCorp to manufacture and sell bikes in India.

At the same time, it is not unknown for Indian two-wheeler brands to join forces with foreign car companies. Earlier, Bajaj-Triumph and TVS-BMW also joined hands to develop new motorcycles in the 300-500cc segment. TVS has partnered with BMW Motorrad to launch the Apache RR 310 and Apache RTR 310, while Triumph has partnered with Bajaj to launch the Speed ​​400 and Scrambler 400X.
