Honda 1.5L turbo engine reliability questioned in lawsuit

It is said that the Honda i-VTEC turbo engine has a cylinder head gasket problem.

— Honda class action lawsuit questions reliability of California’s 1.5-liter turbo i-VTEC gasoline direct-injection engine.

The lawsuit alleges that turbine engine coolant collected in grooves in the engine’s cylinder head and damaged the head gasket, causing coolant to leak into the cylinder.

The Honda class action lawsuit includes:

“All current and former owners or lessees of such vehicles purchased or leased in California.”

These vehicle classes include models equipped with the 1.5-liter turbocharged i-VTEC engine:

  • 2018-2022 Honda Accord

  • 2016-2022 Honda Civic

  • 2017-2022 Honda CR-V

According to the turbine engine class action lawsuit, the defect is caused by “the design and/or manufacture of the engine block and cylinder head, including the use of an inappropriate cylinder head gasket or other sealing compound or feature on the cylinder head.”

As shown, the design includes grooves where the engine cylinder head meets the engine block.

Honda i-VTEC engines have high compression, and the class action lawsuit alleges that the turbo engines are unable to manage heat and compression.

Coolant leaks can prevent the Honda i-VTEC engine from cooling properly and can lead to turbine engine failure and fire. The lawsuit also claims that i-VTEC engines can lose power and misfire when coolant leaks into the pistons.

The Honda class action lawsuit was filed by California plaintiff Chris Bissell, who owns a 2018 Honda Accord that he claims is unsafe. The 1.5-liter i-VTEC head gasket allegedly failed when the car had traveled about 87,000 miles.

Although an independent mechanic replaced the head gasket in March 2024, the plaintiff said the problem persists with his Honda Accord, and he claims he is “constantly at risk of serious injury or death.”

Bissell filed a class-action lawsuit in California with claims exceeding $5 million.

As repeated in every auto class action lawsuit:

“Had Plaintiffs and Class Members known about Honda’s knowledge of the engine defects, they would not have purchased their Class vehicles or would certainly have paid less to do so.”

The Honda 1.5L Turbo i-VTEC engine class action lawsuit has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California: Chris Bissell v. American Honda Motor Co., Ltd. et al..

Plaintiffs are represented by Blood Hurst & O’Reardon, LLP and Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles, PC
