— A Honda i-VTEC engine class action lawsuit alleges that at least three Honda models in Canada are equipped with defective turbocharged engines.
Brandon Sameep Aujha filed a lawsuit claiming his 2018 Honda Accord shuddered, vibrated and/or misfired due to a defect in the four-cylinder 1.5-liter i-VTEC turbocharged gasoline direct-injection engine.
The plaintiff claims that the turbine engine problem “created a dangerous condition that created a real, substantial and imminent risk of injury or harm to the plaintiff, the vehicle’s occupants, and others on the roadway.”
The Honda Canada class action lawsuit covers these vehicles equipped with the 1.5-liter i-VTEC turbocharged engine.

2017-2022 Honda CR-V
According to the lawsuit, the Honda engine was unable to handle the heat and compression, which would cause coolant to leak.
The plaintiffs allege that coolant collected in the grooves of the engine’s cylinder head, causing the head gasket to degrade, causing coolant to leak into the combustion chamber. The engine can overheat and blow the head gasket, causing loss of power and engine failure.
A coolant leak means the turbocharged engine is left unprotected, causing it to become deformed and seize, potentially causing a fire. Coolant could also allegedly leak into the pistons and cause the engine to misfire. The lawsuit also alleges the coolant mixed with the engine oil and contaminated the oil, causing corrosion and premature engine wear.
Honda failed to order a recall of the 1.5-liter i-VTEC engines, and dealers allegedly failed to properly repair the vehicles. Honda owners were also allegedly forced to pay thousands of dollars in engine repair bills.
According to the Honda Canada class action lawsuit, replacing a blown head gasket can cost more than $5,000, which is paid not by Honda but by the vehicle owner.
Honda also allegedly failed to reimburse customers for towing costs and rental vehicle costs.
