
Looks like buyers are waiting for next-gen Honda Passport before placing orders

- Honda Pilot sales increased 62% in September, while Passport sales fell 43%.
- Most brands saw declines in September, but their year-to-date sales figures remain solid.

The Honda Pilot had a strong year in the United States, with sales up 25% from January to September. Honda’s midsize Passport, on the other hand, has seen a decline in popularity, down 29% year-to-date, which could be a sign that potential buyers are waiting for the launch of a new generation model.
Since the beginning of this year, Honda has delivered a total of 959,371 vehicles in the first nine months, a year-on-year increase of 12%. Still, sales fell 7% in September, with most models showing declines.

The biggest decline in September was Honda Passport, with sales down 43%. Other decliners included the Accord (-20%), Civic (-16%), CR-V (-16%), HR-V (-15%) and Ridgeline (-3%). On the bright side, Pilot sales increased 62% in September to 10,630 units sold. Notably, the rugged TrailSport trim will account for more than 16 percent of 2024 Pilot sales. (-43%
Year-to-date numbers look more positive for the HR-V (+32%), Civic (+28%) and CR-V (+14%). The CR-V remains Honda’s most popular model in the United States, with 298,164 units sold so far in 2024. Unfortunately, Ridgeline sales will be down 17% this year.

On the electric vehicle front, Honda sold 3,785 Prologue units in September 2024, calling it a “strong month.” However, that number represents only a fraction of the 30,080 total sales of Honda and Acura electric vehicles for the month, with hybrids accounting for the majority.
Hybrids account for more than 54 percent of CR-V sales, more than 50 percent of Accord sales, and about 18 percent of Civic sales. American Honda Motor Co.’s vice president of vehicle sales, Lance Woelfer, mentioned that the company is facing “supply issues due to electric vehicle production preparations and disruptions caused by Hurricane Helene in the Southeast.”
The Acura division sold 9,926 vehicles in September 2024, a decrease of 22% compared to September 2023. The largest decline was seen in TLX (-55%), followed by Integra (-46%), MDX (-25%), and RDX (-16%). Acura’s sales so far this year are 97,124 vehicles, down 12% from the same period last year.
