The steering wheels on Acuras and Hondas can feel sticky or even stuck while driving.

— Honda is recalling more than 1.9 million Acura and Honda vehicles that may have sticky steering wheels while driving.

Honda says the steering gearbox assembly may not have been manufactured correctly, which could cause excessive internal friction.

Drivers report that the Acura and Honda’s steering wheels feel sticky.

Honda’s sticky steering wheel problem has resulted in more than 10,300 warranty claims on these recalled vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into Honda Civic steering wheels in March 2023. More than 238,000 Civic vehicles are being investigated after drivers said they felt the steering wheel was stuck.

A few months later, NHTSA upgraded and expanded Honda’s sticky steering probe to cover approximately 530,000 Honda Civic, Honda CR-V and Acura Integra vehicles.

Specifically, steering stick is caused by a faulty steering transmission worm gear, which expands when exposed to heat and moisture. This reduces the thickness of the grease film between the worm gear and the worm gear.

Honda also determined that the worm gear spring preload was too high, which increases sliding forces between components.

“Excessive friction between these components can cause unusual steering noise, increased steering effort and difficulty, or ‘sticky’ steering.” — Honda

About 240,000 vehicles in Canada are being recalled due to sticky steering systems.

Honda says owners can be reimbursed if they pay to fix sticky steering wheels.

Honda Viscous Steering recall letters will be mailed out in mid-November 2024, at which time dealers will replace the worm gear springs and redistribute or add grease as needed.

According to Honda, there have been no reports of injuries, but the automaker has not disclosed whether any collisions have occurred due to sticky steering.
