How an American city uses roundabouts to repair traffic, cuts down crashes

Most people may not have heard of Green, Ohio, but this small town in the northeast of the state suddenly caught the attention of something you might not have expected: the roundabout. Yes, roundabout. Although they seem to be relatively mundane features of road design, these circular intersections have actually helped the city win a National Award.

By slowing down flow and making the situation go smoothly, the roundabout greatly reduces serious accidents that usually occur at traditional intersections. In a town of about 28,000 residents, the problem of crowding is growing, increasing the impact of roundabouts, and having a significant impact. Not only can they improve driver and pedestrian safety, they also save city money on infrastructure costs.

Reduce congestion and more safety

The “Massillon Road Roundabout Project” is the creative idea of ​​American Constructionpoint, which designed and built two multi-lane roundabouts on Boettler Road and Corporate Woods Circle/Thorn Drive, replacing the older intersection. The new design also includes updated sidewalks and crosswalks for pedestrians, allowing everyone to use the area.

This simple solution relieves congestion in busy areas and allows you to see more than 24,000 cars per day. According to the analysis of the US structural point, the road needs to be expanded to nine lanes to achieve the same results as traditional intersections.

The company claims the roundabout project saves the city about $1.2 million in costs related to right of way, land acquisition, construction and future maintenance.

Thanks to the success of the project, Green and U.S. Structural Points received a national recognition award from the US Engineering Corporate Commission (ACEC) at the 2025 Engineering Excellence Award. Additionally, the project will receive the American Highway Engineers Association’s Outstanding Highway Project Award later this month.

More roundabouts

With 12 roundabouts, Green is expected to have more. Now, Massillon Road alone has 6 roundabouts with 2.5 miles of road, and plans to add 4 roundabouts to bring the city’s total to 16.

This will make Green the roundabout for Northeast Ohio cities like FOX8. Interestingly, central Ohio is more committed to roundabouts, with the Greater Columbus area having over 100. For record, Dublin, Ohio, currently owns the state’s roundabout capital with a 17-man championship.
