Hyundai breaks into Ford dealership, destroys new 2000 Mustang SVT Cobra R
  • A rare delivery-mileage 2000 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra R was wrecked in a dealer accident.
  • A Hyundai Tucson driver burst into a showroom where an SVT Cobra R was parked.
  • The incident occurred earlier this month at the Tri-Cities Ford dealership in Eden, North Carolina.

Mustangs get wrecked all the time, but rarely do they meet death like this one did. This is no ordinary Mustang, but a rare 2000 SVT Cobra R, one of only 300 ever produced. Or even rarer? This particular model has delivery miles, making it a virtual showroom unicorn. Now, due to some extremely bad luck (or judgment), it’s in dire need of major repairs.

It didn’t crash while out eating donuts or exhausted, but sitting quietly in the dealership when the accident happened. It looks as if a Hyundai driver somehow breached the entryway and then destroyed the original pony car.

The dealer in question is Tri-City Ford of Eden, North Carolina, and the accident appears to have occurred around December 14th. Someone in an older generation Hyundai Tucson was driving it when it smashed through the front of the dealership and kept going until the Mustang stopped.

It’s obvious from the photos that debris was scattered everywhere and the passenger side of the pony car was severely damaged. A second photo of the Ford after the accident showed the door being crushed. The windshield was shattered and all the side glass appeared to be shattered as well. We also see a plastic covering on the passenger seat, which hints at other features of the car. It is reported to have very low mileage.

In a video from 2017, we saw a dealer launch it. “Hasn’t started in two years…time to tune up and go back to sleep,” the post read. Initially, the engine sounded rather rough, but it soon smoothed out. We then got a photo showing the car had only been driven 15 miles since new. According to a person at the scene, the car had “only traveled a few miles” when the accident occurred.

According to Classic, the Mustang was worth six figures before the accident. Combined with the ultra-low mileage, it may be the best-preserved example of this car. At this stage, it’s anyone’s guess what the owner will do with it next. Maybe with the damage done, he’ll actually use it on the road as Ford intended.

Carscoops has contacted the dealer and owner and will update this story as more information becomes available.
