Hyundai’s N performance division knows a thing or two about developing cars that feel right at home on a racetrack, and its next creation, the Ioniq 6 N, is taking shape and being tested to its limits at Germany’s Nürburgring Nordschleife.

The South Korean automaker is one of many brands with a testing facility outside of the famous German racetrack, and it recently took a heavily camouflaged prototype to the track. The car was tested in both dry and wet conditions, and for an electric car weighing more than 2,000 kilograms (4,400 pounds), it looked very fast and impressively smooth around some of the track’s high-speed corners.

The world got its first look at the Ioniq 6 N a few years ago with the unveiling of the RN22e “rolling laboratory” concept. The concept was Hyundai’s first car to feature a simulated eight-speed gearbox, a system that later debuted in the Ioniq 5 N. The car received plenty of praise (and awards), and the low-riding nature of the Ioniq 6 N will likely mean it’ll be even more enjoyable to drive.

You might notice that the front of this prototype is quite different to the current Ioniq 6. That’s because it adopts the revised front end intended for the rest of the Ioniq 6 range. The most notable change will be the adoption of split headlights instead of the slightly odd-looking headlights on the current model. This should make the car look more dynamic and aggressive, which suits the N model very well.
The Ioniq 6 N will feature a number of unique design touches, including a revised splitter, new side skirts and a unique rear. The most obvious upgrade on this prototype is the fixed wing.
The car will likely share its powertrain with the Ioniq 5 N. That means it will have an 84 kWh battery pack driving a pair of electric motors good for 601 horsepower and 545 lb-ft (739 Nm) of torque, climbing to 641 hp and 568 lb-ft (770 Nm) with N Grin Boost enabled.
