Hyundai Tucson outsells Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and Alfa

It turns out that a lot of people want a Tucson, and far fewer want a Dodge, Chrysler, or Alfa Romeo

Hyundai Tucson Outsells Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat And Alfa Romeo Brands Combined
  • Hyundai sold 53,801 Tucsons in the third quarter, while the four Stellantis brands sold just 51,406 units.
  • Chrysler’s third-quarter sales fell to 22,482 vehicles, a sharp 47% decrease from the same period last year.
  • Stellantis’ ongoing sales decline highlights deeper problems and raises growing concerns about its future.

If Hyundai is disappointed that Tucson sales are down 5% this year, one can imagine how Stellantis executives are feeling now. To put their situation into perspective: Hyundai sold 53,801 Tucsons in the third quarter alone, more than Stellantis’ Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Dodge and Chrysler brands combined, which sold more during the same period Only 51,406 units.

While Tucson sales are down 5% year-to-date, sales eased slightly in the third quarter, rising 2% compared with the same period last year. Mild as that may be, Stellantis would undoubtedly welcome any positive sales change for the struggling Dodge, Chrysler, Alfa Romeo or Fiat brands.

Fiat’s results this quarter have been particularly dismal, with the brand selling just 100 vehicles per month and a total of 316 cars sold in three months. Alfa Romeo fared slightly better, moving 2,049 cars over the same period, but those figures are far from impressive.

We’ve talked about this underperformance before, but it bears repeating: even the Chevrolet Camaro, which has been out of production since January 2024, managed to outsell the Alfa Romeo Giulia in the third quarter. This fact alone speaks volumes about the challenges Stellantis faces.

What’s even more surprising is that a big brand like Chrysler not only lags behind Hyundai, but even a single popular model like the Tucson. The company sold only 22,482 vehicles in the third quarter, which was 47% lower than the same period in 2023.

Chrysler currently only makes two models – the now-discontinued 300 and Pacifica minivans. With the Voyager returning later this year, the product line remains thin, with just one model, even though it’s sold under two different names.

Likewise, Dodge sold 26,559 vehicles in the third quarter, down 43% from the same period last year. This decline is largely due to the discontinuation of the Charger and Challenger, but it also points to problems with Stellantis’ plans. Without immediate replacements for these popular models, Dodge had a huge hole in its lineup and sales took a hit.

Perhaps all this data can shed some light on why rumors are growing that Stellantis may be looking for a new CEO to replace Carlos Tavares. It may also explain why so many executives have jumped ship in recent months. Whether the problem is at the top or somewhere in the middle, there’s no doubt that Stellantis needs a lot of work to get back to its previous sales numbers.
