Indian business magnate dies after brief illness, leaving behind legacy of innovation and philanthropy
Mumbai, Oct 10 – Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Sons and one of India’s most influential business leaders, died on Wednesday at the age of 86 after a brief illness. Tata had been undergoing treatment at Breach Candy Hospital for age-related health problems, but his condition worsened. The public was initially assured that his health was stable, but his condition rapidly deteriorated, resulting in him being hospitalized in intensive care.
Global Expansion Architect
Between 1991 and 2012, Tata’s leadership reshaped the Tata Group, transforming it into a global industrial giant. Under his leadership, the group acquired several international companies, most notably Jaguar Land Rover in 2008 and Corus Steel in 2007. These strategic acquisitions have helped Tata Motors and Tata Steel become important players on the global stage.
During his tenure, Tata Group’s revenue soared 40-fold from $5.8 billion in 1991 to nearly $85 billion in 2011.
Ethical leaders and innovators
Tata is also known for its focus on ethical business practices and corporate governance. His insistence on integrity became a hallmark of the Tata Group, reinforcing its reputation for transparency and trust.
He has spearheaded groundbreaking innovations, including the launch of the Tata Nano, designed to provide an affordable car to Indian families. Despite the Nano’s failure, Tata Motors has gone from strength to strength and is now competing with Hyundai India and Mahindra & Mahindra for the second spot in car sales. In August this year, Elon Musk called Ratan Tata a gentleman and a scholar.
Tributes are pouring in
Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Tata, describing him as a “visionary” who contributed not only to industry but also to India’s social fabric through philanthropy. Tata’s successor, N Chandrasekaran, chairman of Tata Sons, described him as a “mentor and guide”, emphasizing his lasting impact on the company and the country.
A legacy of philanthropy
Apart from business, Ratan Tata is deeply involved in philanthropy through the Tata Trusts, focusing on initiatives in the areas of education, healthcare and rural development. The work he does through the Trust has impacted the lives of millions of people, especially in underserved communities in India.
Tata’s death marked the end of an era in Indian industry, but his legacy lives on through the many businesses and philanthropies he nurtured.
