India requires two helmets to be sold every two rounds

Quick Overview:

  • All new two-wheelers come with two ISI certified helmets.
  • The move is designed to curb the massive death toll for two-wheeler riders.
  • Helmet manufacturers support the program and plan to increase production.

Going on a safer road

Road Transport and Highway Union Minister Shri Nitin Gadkari has boldly announced that every new two-wheeler sold in India must be equipped with two ISI certified helmets. The directive revealed at the automatic summit in New Delhi, aiming to address the shocking speed of road accidents and deaths in the country.

India has more than 4,80,000 road accidents and 1,88,000 deaths each year, and two-wheelers make up a large part of this number. Shockingly, about 69,000 two-wheeler riders die each year, almost half of these deaths occur due to the lack of a helmet.

The industry welcomes these two helmet tasks

The two-wheeled helmet manufacturer association (THMA), the largest representative body of India’s helmet manufacturers, put weight behind this decision. The association has long advocated stricter helmet usage regulations, a move that is consistent with their safety-first approach.

THMA President Rajeev Kapur stressed that this is not just a regulation, but a necessity. “This directive brings hope for families who have lost loved ones in preventable crashes. Now is the time for us to prioritize safety,” he said.

Helmet manufacturers are now preparing to meet the increase in demand. Production of ISI certified helmets is expected to increase significantly to ensure high-quality protective equipment available across the country.

Will this change be commuting in India in two rounds?

Despite the existence of helmet laws, compliance remains a major issue in India, especially among Pillion riders. The new directive is designed to address this gap by ensuring both riders and passengers can be protected from the showroom.

However, forcing these helmets to be used remains a challenge. While the manufacturer will provide them, it ultimately depends on the rider wearing them. Advocacy campaigns and strict law enforcement are crucial to make this initiative truly effective.

The final thought

This move is like getting free side dishes in your favorite meals, except that it can save your life. A helmet may not be the most exciting accessory for a new bike, but it is undoubtedly the most important. Because, let’s face it, no one looks cool in the hospital bed.
