Is Rimac planning a hotter, more hardcore Nevera for the Monterey car?

  • Croatian supercar brand Rimac has hinted that it is preparing to launch a new superfast electric car.
  • The company has deleted all old posts on Instagram, and its profile now reads “A new storm has come, stay tuned.”
  • We’re eyeing the hardcore, more track-oriented Nevera model, which will debut at Monterey Car Week in August.

Mate Rimac has a lot on his plate right now besides Bugatti and his new tourbillon hypercar and his new self-driving taxi business, but some unusual activity on Rimac Automobili’s Instagram page suggests he hasn’t forgotten about the car and brand that made him famous, and is about to unveil something even crazier than the Nevera.

var adpushup = window.adpushup = window.adpushup || {que:()}; adpushup.que.push(function() { if (adpushup.config.platform !== “DESKTOP”){ adpushup.triggerAd(“4d84e4c9 -9937-4f84-82c0-c94544ee6f2a”); } else{ adpushup.triggerAd(“6a782b01-facb-45f3-a88f-ddf1b1f97657”); } });

Rimac has yet to officially announce the new car, so we can only follow what happens on its Instagram page. All of the company’s old posts have been deleted, and the only content currently published is an Instagram story.

“A new storm has swept in,” the report said. “Please stay tuned.”

window._taboola = window._taboola || (); _taboola.push({ mode: ‘thumbnails-oc-2×1’, container: ‘taboola-mid-article-thumbnails-organic’, placement: ‘Article mid thumbnail organic’, target_type: ‘mix’ });

The same wording also appears on the company’s Insta profile, so what could Rimac possibly be doing? Deleting all posted content from a social media channel is an extreme move, one that brands usually only take when they are about to make a radical move.

Does this mean Rimac is about to unveil an all-new hypercar? We think not. Our money is on a more extreme Nevera with more power and a more aerodynamic design – the “Storm” reference is surely intentional. CEO Mate Rimac has always said the current Nevera is more of a hyper GT than a track-focused car, which is how most multimillion-dollar hypercars are designed.

The Nevera has set a number of acceleration records, including last year’s 0-to-60-mph (97-kph) time of 1.74 seconds, a quarter-mile of 8.25 seconds, a 0-to-400-kph (249-mph) time of 21.31 seconds, and the fastest production electric car on the Nürburgring. But we think its 7:05.298 Nürburgring time is nothing to brag about, given the Nevera’s power and straight-line speed. A Porsche 911 GT3 with the Manthey package has less than a third of the power, but is five seconds quicker thanks to less weight and more downforce.

So let’s imagine that Rimac adds some horsepower to the Nevera’s quad-motor output, does its best to reduce the curb weight, and equips it with some super-sticky rubber and a set of spoilers to generate a ton of extra downforce. The lap time would be well under 7 minutes, and its acceleration and braking figures would also be improved (aside from perhaps some drag-limiting effects at top speed).

Building a more extreme Nevera might be just what Rimac needs to boost disappointing sales. Mate Rimac told reporters in May that his company still has no plans to build 150 Neveras because wealthy car buyers prefer supercars powered by internal combustion engines.

Rimac’s Instagram spring cleaning time gives us an idea of when we can expect to see what the company has in the works. Monterey Car Week takes place from August 9 to 18 in California, and it will be packed with sickeningly wealthy car enthusiasts.

What do you think Rimac has in store, a hotter Nevera or something more radical? Leave your comments below.
