Isuzu built the coolest retro truck you've never heard of
  • Isuzu has launched a large number of upgraded versions of the TFR pickup since 1988.
  • The Dragon Max features LED lights, 17-inch wheels and a lowered suspension.
  • A single-use tuned turbodiesel produces 217 hp and 406 lb-ft.

Classic truck lovers, note: Isuzu has just abandoned a retro-style concept that proves that the old-fashioned charm still holds a place in the modern car world. They did it with style – recovered fan favorites from the late 80s, not just deep in the skin.

It is called Dragon Max, and it is based on the distinctive posture of the brand’s 1988 TFR midsize truck. This one-off concept will update the styling with a new turbodiesel engine and a completely modern interior, giving the old platform a second life.

Dragon is the local nickname of Isuzu TFR in Thailand, and the model wears many faces on the global market. Depending on your residence, this truck may be labeled with faster speeds, rodeo, pickups, invaders, and even Honda Ippon. It also appears under Opel, Vauxhall, Holden and Chevrolet Nameplates. Originally launched in 1988, this generation lasted until 2002, when it was eventually replaced by the first generation of Isuzu D-Max.

Retro look, modern hardware

Dragon Max keeps the original TFR Bodyshell primarily intact, but updates the visuals with a few key touches. New LED headlights and smoky taillights give it a newer look, while the matte grille and a matte painted Job pull it firmly to 2025. The rear spoiler adds sport edges and adds sport edges, while the black 17-inch wheels combine a revised suspension to bring the entire suspension to the lower end.

This approach is no different from the concepts on the upper level from Hyundai a few years ago (such as the grand technology of the Heritage series) (modern technology and style).

As for the fifty ancestors of Thailand

Isuzu also has no material to browse. Most of the interior plastics were replaced with Alcantara and added carbon trim and leather seat inserts to dial the quality feel. Since the concept is based on the truck’s extended cab (space cab) version, there is some space behind the front seats, plus a reasonable sized bed behind to carry any cool retro truck fan today.

Appropriate power upgrade

The most important upgrade is mechanical. At the heart of the Dragon Max is the 2.2-liter Maxforce turbodiesel engine from the Isuzu, a modern unit recently introduced in the current D-MAX and MU-X models.

according to Paultanthe engine has been tuned to produce 217 hp (162 kW/220 ps) and 550 nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. Compared to the standard specification, this is a jump of 57 ps and 150 nm, more than twice the output of the original TFR. The power supply is sent to the rear wheels via a modern eight-speed automatic transmission, which feels perfect for part-time machines.

The Bangkok International Auto Show (BIMS) revealed Dragon Max, where it attracted widespread attention from protesters. To accompany the unveiling, Isuzu released a backward-themed video that just fits the “nostalgia” button. You can view it below.
