Ssangyong Australia to be renamed KGM Ssangyong Australiabringing it in line with other markets around the world.
The car-maker’s Australian division is currently known as KG Mobility in its home country of South Korea, inheriting the KGM prefix but retaining the Ssangyong name and keeping the familiar winged logo.
Australia is one of the last markets to adopt the KGM name, which was created after South Korean industrial company KG Group acquired a 61% stake in the company in 2022.
However, Australia is one of the few markets to use the KGM SsangYong brand, a decision made to ensure continued recognition of the brand. In most markets, the manufacturer is now simply known as KG Mobility or KGM.

“We decided to adopt a new name to fully leverage Ssangyong Motor’s strengths,” said Kuo Jae-soon, chairman of Ssangyong and KG Group, in December 2022.
“The name Ssangyong has both a fan base and a painful image.”
The introduction of the new name coincides with the launch of the new Torres SUV, which goes on sale in October.
SsangYong has been a fixture on the Australian automotive scene since the mid-1990s and has operated as a factory owned and supported brand since 2019, with a national headquarters and parts distribution centre in Melbourne.
KGM Australia’s Ssangyong range includes the Musso ute and Rexton seven-seat large SUV, as well as the mid-size Korando crossover.
The petrol-powered Torres will be joined by the electric Torres EVX later this year, which will be the brand’s first electric vehicle (EV) in Australia.
