Jaguar Land Rover InControl litigation settled

Jaguar Land Rover’s InControl Touch Pro and InControl Touch Pro Duo systems are said to be defective.

— The Jaguar Land Rover InControl infotainment system class action lawsuit has been settled for owners of some 2016-2020 vehicles.

Jaguar Land Rover denies all allegations in the lawsuit, which alleges that the InControl Touch Pro and InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment systems are defective.

If you owned or leased one of the following vehicles equipped with the InControl Touch Pro or InControl Touch Pro Duo infotainment system on October 20, 2023, you may be included in the InControl litigation settlement.

  • 2017-2020 Range Rover

  • 2017-2020 Land Rover Range Rover Sport

  • 2018-2020 Range Rover Velar

  • 2016-2020 Range Rover Evoque

  • 2017-2020 Land Rover Discovery

  • 2017-2020 Land Rover Discovery Sport

  • 2018-2020 Jaguar E-Pace

  • 2017-2020 Jaguar F-Pace

  • 2019-2020 Jaguar I-Pace

  • 2018-2020 Jaguar F-Type

  • 2017-2020 Jaguar XE

  • 2016-2020 Jaguar XF

  • 2016-2019 Jaguar XJ

However, some vehicles are not equipped with the InControl infotainment system and are therefore not included in the lawsuit settlement.

The vehicles allegedly had issues with their radios, smartphone integration, heating and air conditioning, rearview camera displays and navigation systems.

According to the class action lawsuit, Jaguar Land Rover did not know how to fix the infotainment issues and “replaced defective vehicle parts with equally defective parts” or advised owners to wait for a “software update” to fix the problem.

However, the software update allegedly failed to fix the InControl infotainment system.

The lawsuit claims that problems with the infotainment system caused drivers to be distracted, and that a technical service bulletin sent to dealers did nothing to fix the problem.

Jaguar Land Rover InControl Litigation Settlement

The settlement provides for what is known as a field service action, even though Jaguar Land Rover has been offering software updates for its InControl infotainment systems for years, and the plaintiffs claim the software updates did not help their vehicles.

Under the settlement, owners or lessees “will have their vehicle’s existing InControl system retrofitted/upgraded, free of charge, to accommodate future upgrades of the InControl system software if it is not already equipped with wireless software capability” and delivered to the vehicle wirelessly/over-the-air (via the internet).

If the vehicle is not already equipped with the upgraded features, owners can take it to a dealership within one year from the effective date of the settlement, unless the vehicle is still under warranty.

InControl Infotainment Extended Warranty

Although the class action lawsuit alleges that Jaguar Land Rover replaced defective InControl infotainment system components with equally defective parts, the InControl settlement includes a one-year extended warranty on the infotainment master controller.

The one-year warranty extension covers dealer repair or replacement of the InControl infotainment master controller.

The original new car warranty period was: four years or 50,000 miles for Land Rover vehicles and five years or 60,000 miles for Jaguar vehicles.

If the vehicle’s original warranty has expired, the one-year warranty extension begins on the date the settlement agreement is finalized.

InControl Software Update

Although the plaintiffs claimed that the InControl software update failed to fix the infotainment system problems, Jaguar Land Rover’s settlement provides for two years of free software updates.

A final fairness hearing is scheduled for October 10, 2024.

Under the InControl lawsuit settlement, plaintiffs Blake George, Stuart Jolly and Laszlo Vas will each receive $5,000, and attorneys representing the plaintiffs will receive $795,000.

The Jaguar Land Rover InControl class action lawsuit has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey: George et al. v. Jaguar Land Rover North America LLC.

The plaintiffs are represented by attorneys Bursor & Fisher, PA and Smith Krivoshey, PC
