Jaguar to stop selling new cars in key markets for a year

  • Jaguar will launch an all-electric car but will stop new car sales in some markets for a year.
  • During this time, it will continue to develop an entirely new product line consisting of electric vehicles.
  • A key concept will be unveiled in December that will largely foreshadow the brand’s future.

These are strange times for Jaguar fans. For the past quarter century, Jaguar has been trying to get as far as BMW. Now, Jaguar has decided to go down a new electrified route. To change course, Jaguar will discontinue all models except the F-Pace. In fact, in some markets, the new Jaguar won’t even go on sale for a year.

Later this year, the automaker will unveil a new concept car that will give us a glimpse into its plans, and Jaguar director Rawdon Glover says the car will be “absolutely not a copycat.” In short, the car’s design should be radically different from almost every model the brand currently sells.

The lights are slimmer, there’s no rear window, and the “Leaper” Jaguar hood ornament has been updated. This will be a six-figure four-seat, four-door GT car that Glover describes as “futuristic than you think.”

No new car sales in Europe, UK for a year

The F-Pace will continue to sell for a while after its debut, but eventually it, too, will die, and in some regions where the F-Pace isn’t available, new Jaguars won’t go on sale for about a year.

Speaking to Autocar about the sales pause, Glover said certain European markets “will not be able to buy a Jaguar for a while” by the end of 2024, with the UK to follow “from the beginning of next year.” The sales pause will come before the brand launches its new all-electric range.

We’ve reached out to Jaguar USA to ask if the sales disruption will also affect the U.S. and Canada. We’ll update this story once we hear back.

It may not be all bad, though. Since this new Jaguar is set to cater to an entirely new market, a little break might make things easier.

As we mentioned in our Rolls-Royce Spectre review, electric cars and high-end luxury go hand in hand. Every major shortcoming of modern electric cars is an afterthought for the super-rich. And that’s exactly who Jaguar is targeting with its current model.

All the naysayers who are upset about Jaguar’s abandonment of combustion technology need to cool down the engine and test drive one before they pass judgement. In the end, anyone who bought a Jaguar in the last few years is probably going to have a very luxurious dealership experience in the near future.
