James May Reviews The Tesla Cybertruck, And His Opinions May Surprise You
  • The Grand Tour host put the Cybertruck through its paces in California.
  • James May ponders whether it’s a modern-day Lamborghini Countach or DMC DeLorean.
  • His ideal Tesla model would be smaller than the Model Y but similar in appearance to the Cybertruck.

We’ve seen and read a ton of reviews of the Tesla Cybertruck since it hit the market late last year, and while James May was a little late to the party with his review of the pickup, he still managed to write a unique review. The question is, does he like what is arguably the most controversial car on sale?

To experience the Cybertruck, May traveled to sunny California, the ideal home for such a cool and expensive car. May’s comments focused primarily on the Cybertruck’s design, not its unique structure or the mechanical components that underpin it. He wondered if it was a modern version of the Lamborghini Countach or DMC DeLorean, or if it was intentionally designed to be ugly like the original Fiat Multipla.

The exterior design of the Cybertruck is the most controversial. Since the entire body is covered with stainless steel panels, it looks almost without any curves, mainly composed of sharp lines, flat surfaces and sharp corners. While this is largely true, May found that many panels (such as the hood and front doors) are slightly raised.

Oddly, the rear doors are almost completely flat when measured vertically and slightly raised when measured horizontally. The rear quarter panels also have flat areas and slightly raised surfaces. May said Tesla’s designers and engineers likely did this on purpose, knowing that all flat surfaces would look a bit odd.

After touring the cabin and test-driving the Cybertruck, May concluded that he does like it, but he doesn’t want to own one. This isn’t surprising, as he has stated that he isn’t a big fan of pickup trucks in general. What he’d like to see is a new Tesla model that’s slightly smaller than the Model Y and similar in design to the Cybertruck.
