Jeep 4xe battery explosion hazard sparks lawsuit

FCA Canada files lawsuit over two battery fire recalls of Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe SUVs

— Explosive battery hazards in the Jeep 4xe have prompted a class-action lawsuit in Canada following the recall of 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee PHEV.

The FCA Canada class action lawsuit includes everyone in Canada who owns, owns, leases, leases and/or uses a 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe or a 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe.

Fiat Chrysler Canada has issued two recalls for Jeep 4xe vehicles because the batteries used in these vehicles may be affected by diaphragm damage. The plaintiff claimed that the battery could explode even if the vehicle was parked.

According to the class action lawsuit, Jeep 4xe customers have been warned not to charge their vehicles and not to park in or near buildings or vehicles.

According to the lawsuit, Chrysler failed to disclose how high-voltage hybrid batteries in more than 14,000 vehicles in Canada exploded and caught fire.

Plaintiffs NA and CL rented a 2021 Jeep 4xe in Montreal in September 2021. They believe FCA is depriving them and other customers of the normal use of their vehicles, including the ability to save money on gas.

The automaker also allegedly replaced defective Jeep 4xe batteries with similarly defective high-voltage batteries. Additionally, Chrysler issued the recall without understanding the root cause of battery explosions and fires.

The lawsuit further claims that despite all the problems, FCA has yet to buy back Jeeps from Canadian customers.

The plaintiffs allege that the Jeep 4xe battery hazards resulted in reduced vehicle value, additional gas, traffic and parking costs, as well as expenses related to “parking tickets, towing fees, repair costs, annoyance, inconvenience, fear, stress, loss of time, etc.”
