Jeep Hybrid Battery Recall lawsuit includes Wrangler, Grand

Jeep Hybrid Battery Fire Protection Litigation Alleges 2 Jeep 4XE Recall Failed.

– The Jeep Hybrid recall led to a class action lawsuit, which included the 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4XE and the 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xE SUV.

The Jeep lawsuit follows two battery recalls involving plug-in hybrid cars or PHEVs. The recall of Jeep battery comes after reports that the SUV caught fire due to a battery defect.

According to Jeep’s measures, the SUV is made of high-voltage batteries that are susceptible to damage to internal battery separators.

Jeep Hybrid Battery Recall

In November 2023, about 32,000 Jeep Wranglers announced their first Jeep 4X battery recall. Fiat Chrysler knew of at least eight battery fires, and six fires occurred when the battery charger was connected.

All eight battery fires occurred when the Jeep was parked and closed. But the FCA said engineers are still trying to determine the root cause of the battery fire.

The Jeep Wrangler’s owner was warned to stop outside and stay away from what might be on fire, and also warned customers not to charge any fees to the Wrangler before repairing.

Chrysler told dealers to update Wrangler high voltage battery pack software and replace the battery pack components if necessary.

However, the first Jeep battery recall was a malfunction, as more battery fires were reported in the Jeep and not among the Wranglers not included in the Jeep Hybrid Battery recall.

In August 2024, battery maker Samsung believed it discovered the cause of the Jeep hybrid battery fire, and in September 2024, FCA announced another battery shooting recall.

This time, after at least 13 battery fires, more than 154,000 Jeep Wrangler hybrid and Jeep Grand Cherokee hybrid SUVs were recalled in the United States. Warn again the owners not to sue their jeep and park it outside away from anything that might have caught fire.

The same hybrid battery recall repair will be performed.

Jeep Mixed Recall Litigation

The class action lawsuit was filed by New York plaintiff Michael Gandelman, who leased a 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4XE, which was recalled due to a battery fire defect. His Jeep was updated with a battery software in January, but the dealer did not replace the hybrid battery.

According to Jeep Mixed Class Action Litigation:

“The FCA includes a Samsung 400-volt, 17-kWh 48-cell lithium-ion battery pack that uses nickel-manganese-cobalt (“NMC”) graphite chemistry in its 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler Phevs and Samsung 400-volt.”

Without high voltage batteries, the Jeep Wrangler or Jeep Grand Cherokee can only run on a gasoline engine, beating the full purpose of a hybrid Jeep.

“In addition, the inability to plug in and charge a class vehicle will undermine the core purpose of a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Without charging, the class vehicle must be run exclusively on its gasoline engine, which eliminates the benefit of having a PHEV and sends it out to not fit its ordinary purpose.” – Jeep Hybrid Battery Recall lawsuit

The class action lawsuit states that there is no evidence that the second Jeep hybrid battery recall will be successful because of the first failed Jeep hybrid battery recall.

According to Jeep’s lawsuit, the FCA knew that Jeep’s batteries were defective and could catch fire before the vehicle was first leased and sold, but Chrysler hid the information with consumers and rented and sold the vehicle.

In other words, the lawsuit claims the FCA knew the current battery problems would occur, but did not resolve them before they were sold, but instead the automaker allegedly decided to continue selling and selling defective Jeeps.

Jeep Hybrid Battery Recall lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Michigan District (South): Michael Gandelman v. FCA US, LLC D/B/A Stellantis North America.

The plaintiff is represented by Kessler Topaz Meltzer & Check, LLP.
