— Jeep power steering pump fire risk sparks class-action lawsuit alleging that 2021 to 2023 Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Wrangler vehicles can catch fire even when the engine is turned off.
The Jeep lawsuit was filed two months after the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched an investigation into 2021-2023 Jeep Gladiator and Wrangler vehicles.
According to safety regulators, the Jeep may have a power steering pump problem that could cause an engine bay fire. Jeep owners reported a fire in the passenger side engine compartment where the power steering pump electrical connector is located.
NHTSA also said most of the fires occurred when Jeep Wranglers and Gladiators were shut down.
The Jeep class action lawsuit alleges that Chrysler knew or should have known about the fire risk before NHTSA launched its investigation. The class action lawsuit also accuses FCA of failing to inform four plaintiffs of the risk of a power steering pump fire when owners purchased Jeeps.
The lawsuit said nine of the approximately 781,459 Jeeps involved in the investigation had engine compartment fires. Additionally, the lawsuit says one person was injured.

Jeff Graves/California/2023 Jeep Wrangler
Jeremy Reed/Kentucky/2021 Jeep Wrangler Sahara PHEV
Wayne Hintergaard/Oregon/2021 Jeep Wrangler Sahara PHEV
Mike Crowell/Tennessee/2023 Jeep Gladiator Rubicon
None of the plaintiffs claim their vehicles had any power steering pump issues, but they claim that if they had known about the “risk of spontaneous combustion,” they “wouldn’t have purchased the vehicle, or would have paid less.”
The plaintiffs want FCA to fix “spontaneous fire risks” and that Chrysler should offer to “recover the purchase price of its fire-risk vehicles, or overpayments for its vehicles,” if customers choose.
The Jeep Power Steering Pump Fire Risk Lawsuit has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (Southern Division): Jeff Graves et al v. FCA US LLC.
The plaintiffs are represented by The Miller Law Firm PC and Hagens Berman Sobol Shapiro LLP.
