Jeep recalls nearly 200,000 Wrangler and Grand Cherokee PHEVs after 13 fires
  • Jeep is recalling nearly 200,000 Wrangler and Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids worldwide due to fire risks.
  • Stellantis has not provided many details, but a routine review of customer data showed 13 fires, prompting an investigation.
  • Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and not charge them until repairs are completed.

The Jeep Wrangler 4xe and Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe are two of the best-selling plug-in hybrids in the United States, so the brand is in trouble due to a massive fire-related recall that affects about 154,032 vehicles in the United States. The recall comes after 13 fires occurred while the vehicles were parked and turned off.

This is a scary development because these are the exact same things that happen when your vehicle is parked in the garage and you sleep at night. It’s a potentially lethal combination, so it’s no surprise that Stellantis tells customers to park outside “away from buildings or other vehicles” until the problem is resolved.

Customers are also advised not to charge as “the risk is reduced when the battery is depleted”. This suggests that owners can still use their vehicles but will not enjoy the benefits of traveling on electricity alone.

Stellantis has not revealed much about the issue at this time, but revealed that the issue was discovered during a routine review of customer data and ultimately led to an internal investigation. The recall affects the 2020-2024 Jeep Wrangler 4xe and the 2022-2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, the company added. However, only 5% of these are expected to have undisclosed flaws.

While the automaker remains tight-lipped, they have assured customers that “remediation is imminent.” Furthermore, Stellantis revealed that the issue is not limited to the United States, but also affects approximately 14,038 vehicles in Canada, 673 vehicles in Mexico, and 25,502 vehicles internationally.
