The production version of the Jeep Recon is almost identical to the renderings released two years ago

- A prototype of the all-electric Jeep Recon was spotted testing on public roads.
- This electric off-road vehicle shares its STLA Large underpinnings with the Jeep Wagoneer S.
- The product was originally slated to hit the market in 2024, but it now looks like it may face delays.
Jeep’s electrification strategy is beginning to take shape, and Recon is at the forefront. Positioned as a battery-powered rival to the Wrangler, it’s designed to blend off-road capability with zero-emissions performance. While its arrival has been teased since 2022, recent spy shots suggest we may have to wait longer than expected for the production model.

Our spy photographers captured three Jeep Recon prototypes in the wild, giving us the clearest look yet at the production-ready design. Dressed in different colors and minimalist camouflage, these testers reveal a vehicle that’s consistent with the prototypes we’ll see in 2023. The boxy styling and off-road cues are in line with official renderings released in September 2022, although it remains to be seen whether the illuminated seven-slot grille will continue into production.
Off-road DNA with an electric twist
Jeep is clearly committed to keeping the Recon’s off-road roots, with its chunky 17-inch wheels wrapped in Nexen Roadian ATX all-terrain tires and a full-size spare mounted on the tailgate.
Its rugged design incorporates signature Jeep touches like removable doors, exposed hinges and bright blue tow hooks. But there are some notable departures from the Wrangler’s playbook, including one-piece bulging fenders reminiscent of the Land Rover Defender, a wraparound greenhouse, and square LED lights at either end. It’s a mix of familiarity and forward-thinking, but overall it looks like an electric car built for adventure.

Recon is based on the STLA Large platform, Stellantis’ versatile electric architecture. While Jeep hasn’t revealed exact specs yet, we can get some clues from its cousin, the Jeep Wagoneer S. The model is equipped with a 600-horsepower electric powertrain and a 100 kWh battery, with a range of more than 300 miles. It’s uncertain whether the Recon will match those numbers or prioritize off-road capability over power.
Jeep has confirmed that the Recon will feature off-road technology to rival the Wrangler, including electronic storage axles and Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction management system. If you’re worried that the Recon might be trading electric street smarts for its off-road cred, don’t worry, it’s built to handle the tough stuff.
ICE is rumored to be on sale
However, there is a curve ball. While all prototypes spotted so far appear to be fully electric, there are rumors that Jeep may offer an internal combustion engine variant. This is not unprecedented. The STLA Large platform supports internal combustion engines and hybrid powertrains, while the gasoline-powered Recon will expand its appeal in regions where electric vehicle charging infrastructure is still incomplete.
Delayed debut, or just fashionably late?
The new Recon is scheduled to start production in 2024, but there are rumors it may not be able to beat its cousin the Jeep Wagoneer S, which is also reportedly facing delays. If true, this would further delay Recon’s launch to 2025. It’s an odd setback for a vehicle so closely tied to Jeep’s electrification ambitions. Then again, delays are actually par for the course in the automotive world, especially when it comes to electric vehicles.
