Kentucky bill would force street racers to keep an eye on their cars

“I want to crush it, I want you to see it and I want others to see it so they don’t put our people at risk again,” said the Kentucky representative behind the bill.

Kentucky bill would force street racers to watch their cars get crushed in public
  • Kentucky lawmakers appear ready to file and pass a new anti-street racing law.
  • If they succeed, those convicted of street racing could have their cars crushed.
  • The proposed bill has support from both major political parties in Kentucky.

Louisville, Kentucky will soon earn a new reputation among street racers. The city will gain the legal right to smash the cars of convicted racers if a determined lawmaker gets his way, seemingly intent on leaving owners to watch their precious machines destroyed. The bill is still in the planning stages but appears to have support from both political parties.

Republican state representative Jason Nemeth was the driving force behind the crackdown in Kentucky. As it stands, those convicted of racing could end up being fined $1,000 and impounded for six months. That sounds bad, but this newly proposed legislation is far more extreme.

during an interview WHAS11Nemeth’s intentions are clear: “A lot of people who do this think of their cars as their children. They would think twice about racing on our public streets and endangering our people. I want to crush it, I hope you see it and I hope others see it so they don’t put our people at risk again.”

Nemeth also noted that he is now drafting the bill. It has not yet been properly introduced and will not be passed until January. When the moment came, though, Nemeth seemed to have all the support he needed.

Mayor Craig Greenberg, a Democrat, also backed the plan, showing a rare display of bipartisan enthusiasm for a controversial measure. “I strongly support legislation that when we impound vehicles involved in this extremely dangerous behavior, those cars are crushed,” he said. Even local law enforcement has said it will support the plan and is already envisioning scenarios.

“We could have a press conference and pull all these cars out and crush something like a Corvette like a steam roller,” said Louisville Police Chief Paul Humphrey. That’s great.”

There’s no doubt that street racing and takeovers are escalating across the country, and leaders in Louisville appear ready to send a dramatic message. But is this the right solution, or just a gimmick to attract attention? We’d love to hear your thoughts – let us know in the comments below.
