Key Tips for IAEE’s First CEM Researcher Kara Dao

Kara Dao, chief operating officer of JDC Events, received IAEE’s First Campaign® (CEM) colleague certification in December. The CEM Fellow Program is an honorary program that is suitable for those careers in the exhibition and event industries. Kara received honors for her consent achievement with 2024 CEM graduates at the Expo! Hobby! IAEE Annual Conference and Exhibition in Los Angeles, California.

In the spirit of sharing knowledge, Kara shares six tips that she considers to be some of the most important advice for exhibition and event professionals.

Tip 1: Curious

This allows for creativity and open minds when planning activities. Curiosity should be an important feature of event professionals – it will naturally encourage you to grasp the top of the trend and see what might be coming in front of others. This curiosity will allow you to not only meet your expectations, but also exceed your customers’ expectations and deliver on your promise of success; for example, by creating unexpected and engaging experiences that can well engage your audience and make them feel better Looking forward to your next event.

Tip 2: Put others first

In short, this is an excellent growth strategy. When dealing with venues, suppliers and teammates, they actively listen and come up with their ideas. The best guidance plan revolves around an overview of duration, interaction frequency and desired structure, and clear guidelines to set goals. And, not just bringing someone under your own wings, nor just one of the best ways to further and expand your knowledge base is to ask others to show you that they acquire new skills and expand your diversity way.

Tip #5: Build your network purposefully

This is the only way to develop resilience when you and your business face challenges and adversities, ignite new opportunities and attract new business leaders. From finding people who are different from your career path and industry to getting and sharing advice, finding solutions and attracting sponsors, the web is like a magical glue that brings the good things together. The web is also a great way to learn further – attend meetings with the mindset of students and find insights that can be used for personal and professional growth and become a beacon for learning from others.

Tip #6: Become a Connector

One of the most important things we can do as event professionals is to serve the industry by connecting people with others. Connectors are social equivalents to the center of computer networks and will help create valuable contacts in a variety of social, professional, cultural and economic circles. As a connector, you can not only help others create touchpoints, but you will also gain from them when the people you contact will keep your opportunities and future connections in mind. As a connector, your mindset should first take into account others without any expectations of anything, because this aspect of the network is to build relationships and develop stronger, more attractive networks.
