Kia EV4 hatchback gets more camouflage to compete with MG4
  • Like other Kia electric models, the EV4 hatchback will feature a sharp exterior design.
  • Kia previewed the compact model as a sedan concept last year.
  • The EV4 will likely be priced under $40,000 in the US market.

Kia showed the world a concept version of the EV4 last October. That was a sedan, and it was widely assumed that it would be the only body style available. However, in early August, our own spy photographers caught a glimpse of an EV4 hatchback undergoing testing under thick camouflage and body cladding. That version has been spotted again, but this time at the Nürburgring.

A lot has been said about Kia’s current design philosophy. Some love it, some hate it, and some are confused by it. There’s no denying it’s bold, and the EV4 will sit well in the range alongside the smaller EV3 and the larger EV5, EV6 and EV9 models. Like those cars, the front end will feature bold headlights, LED daytime running lights and short overhangs.

Other recent EV4 prototypes have had their side cladding stripped away to reveal flush door handles and angular side windows. The concept’s wild black and silver wheels appear to be ready for production. Kia engineers did their best to hide the prototype’s rear fascia, but the production model will inevitably feature similar LED taillights to the EV4 sedan concept, modified to better fit the hatchback’s shape.

The new model will use the familiar E-GMP architecture used by many electric vehicles from Hyundai, Kia and Genesis. Like the EV3, the EV4 is likely to be equipped with 58.3 kWh and 81.4 kWh battery packs, with the base model up to 201 horsepower, and a more powerful dual-motor version further up the list. A performance-focused GT is expected, which should compete with the MG4 XPower.
