The company found an EV9 that could not exceed 12 mph in some cases

- Kia recalls over 300 examples of EV9 SUVs as they may lose momentum.
- The problem is related to incorrect welds and the dealer will replace the rear gear drive.
- There were ten incidents reported, but no accidents or injuries.
The Kia EV9 has been warmly welcomed and has received many honors, including the 2024 World Automobile. This is commendable, but the recalls start to add up. The latest involves 342 units of the 2025 model, which may have improperly welded rear gear driver motor shafts.
As the safety recall report explains, the EV9 equipped with a dual-sport all-wheel drive system may be affected by “because of a supplier’s welding error. This error means “the motor inside the rear GDU (gear drive) may be damaged, reducing acceleration and power. ”

The vehicles were built in Georgia between October and December last year. Drivers can be notified of notifications about issues with strange noise or “Check AWD/4WD” warning messages.
Kia discovered the problem in January when they noticed trends in aid cases and reported momentum loss cases. This triggered an investigation, and the disassembly revealed that the motor shaft inside the rear gear driver was damaged due to welding errors. The engineers also tested the EV9 and found that it “don’t accelerate 12 mph under certain conditions”.

Kia knows there are ten reports claiming power loss or reduction. However, there were no accidents or injuries related to the issue.
Owner notifications are scheduled to be mailed later this week and dealers will replace the rear gear drive unit. This is easier said than done, because it obviously takes more than six hours to swap.
