With all the safety credentials and the beefed-up K1 platform Kia Syros is packing, are five-star safety ratings on the horizon?
Kia India shocked the nation by launching the Syros SUV at a grand event in Delhi NCR. This sub-4m SUV is taller and wider than the Sonet. As a result, the interior space is larger and the comfort level is comparable to that of a compact SUV. Even in terms of technology, the Kia Syros is excellent, with many industry-leading features.
Kia Syros aims for 5-star safety rating?
When it comes to safety, the Kia Syros leaves no stone unturned. The company offers 6 airbags, reinforced body shell, radar-based Level 2 ADAS with 16 autonomous functions, and more. Is Kia Syros targeting a 5-star crash rating from Bharat NCAP? Let’s take a look at Syros’ security credentials.
Behind all the style and panache, the Kia Syros is based on Hyundai Kia’s K1 platform. The company mentioned that Syros’ K1 platform is an enhanced version with superior structural integrity. In Hyundai Group’s product portfolio, the K1 platform was launched in 2018 and is a modified version of the old SA platform.
Models based on this platform also include Hyundai Santro, Grand i10 NIOS, Aura sedan, Casper and its electric version, Inster and Hyundai Exter. Unlike Hyundai’s wheelbase of 2,400 mm and 2,450 mm, the Kia Syros’s K1 platform has a wheelbase of 2,550 mm.
Kia India offers all four disc brakes in the automatic variant, while the manual variant still comes with a rear drum brake. In addition to the enhanced version of the K1 platform, Syros’ radar-based ADAS suite is also very impressive. This is the first time radar-based Level 2 ADAS has been introduced in the sub-4m SUV space, and Syros is equipped with up to 16 autonomous driving functions.
Notable features among these 16 include FCW (Forward Collision Warning), FCA (Forward Collision Avoidance Assist for cars, bicycles, pedestrians, intersections and direct oncoming traffic), SCC (Smart Cruise Control) with start-stop function, LKA (Lane Keeping Assist), LFA (Lane Following Assist), PCA-R (Parking Collision Avoidance Assist – Reverse) and even HBA (High Beam Assist).
20 standard high-security features
In addition to these ADAS features, Kia has also incorporated features such as a blind-sight monitor in the dashboard and a 360-degree camera in the infotainment screen. Kia Connect Diagnostics, OTA (over-the-air) updates continuously improve the system, and more. The Kia Connect 2.0 telematics system also features SOS and call center assisted navigation. Syros also comes standard with 20 high-security features. 6 airbags, 3-point seat belts and seat belt reminders for all occupants, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), HSA (Hill Start Assist), VSM (Vehicle Stability Management), Electronic Parking with Auto Hold Brakes are notable safety features on the Syros.
With its strong safety credentials, the Kia Syros is expected to set a new benchmark in the sub-4 meter SUV segment. Syros reflects Kia’s commitment to passenger safety with its enhanced K1 platform, six airbags, radar-based Level 2 ADAS with 16 autonomous functions and 20 standard high safety features. These advancements make it a strong contender to achieve the 5-star rating from Bharat NCAP and potentially become the first Kia car to receive this prestigious safety honour in India. If successful, it will further cement Kia’s reputation for delivering vehicles that prioritize innovation, safety and customer trust.
