Kia Telluride brake issues spark class action lawsuit

If the Kia Telluride brakes are not recalled, Telluride brakes will allegedly continue to fail.

— Kia Telluride brake problems have sparked a class-action lawsuit that claims Telluride brakes should be recalled to prevent brake failures.

According to the lawsuit, 2020-2024 Kia Telluride SUVs are experiencing brake issues that are allegedly caused by the master cylinder.

However, the two property owners suing were apparently unsure of the specifics.

“Plaintiffs’ investigation is ongoing and the root cause of the defect will be honed and identified through discovery in this lawsuit, but Plaintiffs’ investigation to date indicates that they therefore claim that the defect originated in the master cylinder in-brake system and may involve Blockage in air, obstruction, or brake lines, or other problem with hydraulic fluid transmission.” — Kia Telluride Class Action Lawsuit

So-called master cylinder problems can cause a soft or “spongy” brake pedal and a loss of brake fluid pressure. Telluride drivers can press the soft brake pedal, which will drop to the floor, preventing the driver from stopping.

The 2020-2024 Kia Tellurides are said to be defective and unsafe due to “dangerous and potentially life-threatening defects.”

Kia Telluride Brake Failure Lawsuit – Plaintiff

Texas plaintiff Sara Raymond purchased a new 2023 Telluride in mid-2023, but she said the brakes suddenly failed in November 2024. Raymond claimed the Telluride vehicle climbed a hill, sped up and was unable to slow down. The plaintiff said her Telluride collided with another vehicle.

She said her Telluride had been at the Kia dealer and Kia body shop for about six weeks, and the dealer allegedly did not offer her a loaner vehicle. The plaintiff complained that she had to pay weekly for the rental vehicle because Kia “was unable to provide a vehicle maintenance schedule.”

Raymond said she is very concerned about the continued serious safety risks associated with Telluride’s brake failures.

Kansas plaintiff Michelle O’Brien purchased a 2024 Telluride in late October 2024 and the brakes failed about three weeks later.

“At the last stop, she tried to stop, but the brakes lost pressure and fell to the floor. It wasn’t until she applied the brakes full force that she felt a slight resistance and came to a complete stop.” — Kia Telluride Class Action Lawsuit

The Kia dealer allegedly did not provide a loaner vehicle and told the plaintiff that her Telluride had been repaired. But she said the dealer could not describe how the brake problem was fixed, “so the plaintiff was unwilling to drive the vehicle.”

The plaintiff said her car was still at the dealership, she didn’t feel safe driving it, and Kia Consumer Affairs allegedly told her not to pick up her Telluride.

O’Brien said she is very concerned about the continued serious safety risks associated with Telluride’s brake failures.

Kia allegedly knew about the brake and master cylinder issues but failed to issue a Telluride brake recall. The automaker also allegedly failed to warn customers about the brake issues, and dealers failed to provide reliable repairs.

It was stated that taking the Telluride to the dealer to have the brake issues repaired would not help, “so any hope of repair or remediation would be futile.”

The Kia Telluride brake failure class action lawsuit has been filed in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California (Southern Division): Sara Raymond et al v. Kia America, Inc..

The plaintiffs are represented by Ahdoot & Wolfson, PC and Shub & Johns LLC.
