For Kim Le Court, a professional cyclist, high-altitude training is more than just a preference. This is required. As she prepares for the hard demands of the bike season, Crystal Springs Mountain Lodge has proven to be the ideal retreat, providing both the physical challenges she needs and the support she needs Her mental health tranquility.
“As athletes, altitude training is crucial to stimulating red blood cell production, which improves endurance and oxygen delivery,” Kim explained. “Entering high into the mountains every year is important for building endurance, and Crystal Springs provides the perfect environment.”
Located in the heart of Mpumalanga, Crystal Springs offers Kim a family experience. “There are many well-known altitude training locations in Europe, but I prefer to be near my husband because it’s very different mentally.”
In addition to strict morning rides and afternoon fitness classes, Kim also discovered great value in Lodge’s unique natural environment. “Who doesn’t want to train hard in the morning and then roam around the zebras and the wood antelope? It’s the ultimate recovery experience,” she said excitedly. “I love safari – we even went for one for our honeymoon – so having a place where I can do my job and still enjoy the beauty of wildlife is really special.”
Crystal Springs’ facilities cater to every aspect of Kim’s demanding training regime. “The gymnasium is perfect for my program and the spa provides a great massage for rehabilitation,” she said. “Nutrition is a key part of my performance, so having the option to cook in a self-service unit is a big advantage. When we didn’t want to cook after a tough meeting, the on-site restaurant always served delicious meals and the staff was very friendly. It felt like home.”
Kim’s daily training schedule at Crystal Springs was very tight. “Usually we go about three to four hours, sometimes even five hours,” she shared. “With the steep gradient and long rises, the 8km climb here can take 30 minutes, which is perfect for building strength and endurance .”
While natural beauty is a big attraction, Crystal Spring also provides Kim’s peace and concentration to prepare for the coming harsh season. “It’s important for me to be in my little bubble, without interruption, restart and recover correctly, and then head overseas for a few months at a time.”
As she looks forward to the upcoming competitions in the UAE and Europe, King reflects on the importance of having a shelter like Crystal Springs. “I could have gone to Italy or Switzerland for altitude training, but I was far from home and it would have affected me mentally. Here, I feel at home while still being able to train at a high level.”
“I’m a Mauritian, but South Africa has become my training ground and base.”
King’s journey as a cyclist is deeply intertwined with her personal story. Born in Mauritius, she is a Mauritius father and Scottish mother who embraces a life of travel and competition, balancing her professional commitment to stay connected with her roots. “I’m the heart of Mauritian, but South Africa has become my training ground and base,” she said. “The Crystal Hot Springs is only an hour and a half from Cape Town, so it’s an easy choice for me.”
As a final inspiration, Kim Jong-un shares her philosophy of perseverance: “No matter the obstacle, it’s about getting up and moving forward. There will always be challenges, but I believe there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
Kim le Court uses Crystal Springs as a training ground to prepare to take over the world and climb a single climb.
