Lamborghini boss says ‘YOLO’ effect behind record sales

  • Stephan Winkelmann noted that Lamborghini is on track to set a record for sales this year.
  • Speaking in Monterrey, Winkelmann also explained the reasons for dropping the Huracan’s V10 engine and replacing it with a turbocharged V8 in the Temerario.
  • The brand sold 5,558 vehicles in the first half of 2024.

Lamborghini Chief Executive Stephan Winkelmann said the “YOLO” effect that emerged in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic helped the company achieve strong sales amid tough financial conditions.

After years of building the Aventador and Huracan, Lamborghini has overhauled its supercar lineup with the Revuelto and Temerario, which debuted at Monterey Car Week last weekend. The Urus family has also been expanded with the introduction of a plug-in hybrid SE model. These models are more powerful and faster than the ones they replace, but also more expensive. Despite this, Lamborghini is expected to set sales records in 2024.

“Since the pandemic ended, we’ve had this ‘YOLO’ effect — you only live once — and despite the global crisis we’ve had here, or the market crisis we’ve had here and there, the geopolitical changes, we’ve still been going strong, people still want to buy these cars, and we still have a long wait time,” Winkelmann told Yahoo Finance in Monterey. “Let’s pray that everything goes well so far and that this year will be perfect because in the first six months of 2024 we have set a new record again, so if things continue to go this way, the whole of 2024 will also be a very good year for Lamborghini.”

In the first six months of this year, Lamborghini delivered 5,558 vehicles to customers worldwide, a significant increase of 14% over the first half of 2023. Last year, Lamborghini broke the 10,000-unit mark for the first time, selling 10,112 vehicles. If the situation continues to be good in the second half of this year, Lamborghini’s sales may exceed 11,000 vehicles by the end of 2024.

In an interview YahooAt the conference, Winkelmann also talked about the new Temerario, the successor to the much-loved Huracan.

While some purists were unhappy with Lamborghini’s decision to ditch the Huracan’s 5.2-liter naturally aspirated V10 in favor of a high-revving 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 with three electric motors, Winkelmann believes the step is “the right direction for Lamborghini.”

“You have to have better performance than the previous generation, and that includes handling, so the weight-to-power ratio is crucial to our success,” he said. “On the other hand, you have to reduce emissions. The battery system reduces emissions, but the battery system also helps improve performance, and this combination, in my opinion, is the right direction for Lamborghini.”
