  • Lamborghini will now launch its first electric car in 2029 instead of 2028.
  • Archrival Ferrari is ahead of Lamborghini with plans to launch its first electric car in 2025.
  • However, the Lamborghini CEO believes that the segment will not be ready for electric vehicles in 2025 or 2026.

Lamborghini’s plans for its first electric car have just been put on hold, but don’t worry, it’s not the time to start doubting the brand yet. The Lanzador is an electric concept car launched in mid-2023 and was originally scheduled to go into production in 2028. Now, the Italian automaker has pushed back that timeline to 2029, according to new reports.

Lanzador is a bit like a 21st century Espada. It offers four seats, two doors, and is not intended to be a hardcore track weapon. Of course, keeping it upright in semi-crossover form might help its sales given current consumer trends. Still, there are signs the EV market may be cooling in regions such as the United States and Europe, although the EV market is growing elsewhere, including in China, with Lamborghini now forecasting production “before the end of the decade” instead of 2028 as initially planned Year.

In November, CEO Stephan Winkelmann made it clear that Lamborghini was playing a long game. “We have enough time to decide whether we need to accelerate or delay the rollout of electric vehicles,” he said. “So far we are not thinking about postponing anything: we say we want to have our first electric car by the end of this decade and it is something we will continue to cultivate because we say it has to be an additional car – The fourth model.”

Thoughtful approach

Although archrival Ferrari plans to launch its first electric car as early as 2025 (four years ahead of Lamborghini), Winkelmann is unfazed. according to Reuters”, he said, “We believe that it is not too late for the emergence of electric vehicles in 2029. We believe that in our segment, the market will be ready by 2025 or 2026. ”

So technically, even if the car arrives a year later than originally planned, the brand can still meet Winklemann’s prediction “within this decade.” Regardless, the brand is understandably cautious about how (and when) it launches such an important product.

Several performance-oriented electric cars on the market today can sprint faster than the new Temerario Hybrid, which itself is no slouch. However, to meet customer expectations, Lamborghini will need to do more than build a fast, straight-line electric crossover. On top of that, it’s wrestling with regulations that could speed up or slow down demand for electric vehicles in its lineup.

“We think this is the right way to face the future,” Winkelmann said. “People are talking about synthetic fuels and that’s an opportunity for our cars.” Hopefully the house of Raging Bull will make the right decision regardless of when its first electric car arrives.
