Land Rover Discovery may redefine

Disco isn’t dead, but you probably wish it was

Land Rover Discovery could be redesigned with minivan-inspired styling
  • Land Rover is looking to redesign the Discovery to differentiate it from the Defender.
  • The redesigned model may borrow design cues from minivans like the Volkswagen ID.Buzz.
  • This suggests that the Discovery Sport may become more of a family car than an off-road vehicle.

Luxury SUVs are a hot commodity, but the Land Rover Discovery has faded from the limelight. While sales of the model were approaching 10,000 per year in the U.S. before the pandemic, the brand sold just 2,416 last year.

That’s disappointing, as the model was easily beaten by the Lexus GX, which sold 4,256 units. Of course, that was partly thanks to the Defender, which stole some sales from the Discovery.

Land Rover is well aware of this problem and is reportedly planning to distance the Defender from the next-generation Discovery. As Land Rover’s Mark Cameron explained to Autocar, “If you look at it from a product perspective, the Defender has been a clear successor to the Discovery since its launch and has cannibalized a lot of the Discovery’s business.”

Although officials didn’t reveal too many details, they did say that the next-generation Discovery will focus on “family adventures” and be positioned in a “truly unique segment.” While this sounds like typical marketing hyperbole, Land Rover really seems to want to change the status quo.

Interestingly, the report suggests the SUV could adopt “some MPV design elements.” It’s unclear which ones exactly, but the publication says the Volkswagen ID. Buzz has been “touted as a potential reference.”

While the model may resemble a crossover more than a minivan, it would still be a significant change. Regardless, the redesigned Discovery is expected to feature both internal combustion engines and electric powertrains. There are also rumors that this new Halo model will sit at the top of the range and have its own “custom performance nameplate.”
