Learn more about the IAEE Young Professional of the Year Award

Eastern Securities spoke with Lauren Miller, CMP, CEM, Smithbucklin Event Services Manager and 2023 IAEE Young Professional of the Year Award winner, Guide to the Young Professionals Recognition Program.

Did you know you were nominated for the IAEE Young Professional of the Year Award?

Lauren: Yes, I am aware that I was nominated for the IAEE Young Professional of the Year Award. My supervisor, Jerry Murphy, Portfolio Director of Smith Bucklin Event Services, also expressed his intention to nominate me. I have great respect for this move, as the process involved soliciting feedback from colleagues and writing a nomination. When both Jerry and the IAEE told me that I had won, I remember feeling both honored and excited for the opportunity that lay ahead. Most importantly, I am grateful for Jerry’s confidence in my work and abilities, and for the IAEE’s willingness to give me this opportunity.

What do you think are the two to three most important benefits or opportunities you have gained as a result of joining the program?

Lauren: Receiving the Young Professional of the Year award has provided me with many unique benefits and opportunities. Most notably, in December 2023, I traveled to IAEE’s Expo! Expo!, where I discovered a wall listing all of the annual IAEE award winners. Being able to put faces to names allowed me to connect and interact with colleagues in the industry. We discussed trends, shared insights, and united over our passion for the events industry. This experience highlighted the importance of networking and knowledge exchange with colleagues.

I made so many new friends at Expo!, which helped me expand my professional network on LinkedIn. Receiving the Young Professional of the Year award made me realize that I not only represent IAEE and Smithbucklin, but also my personal brand. I appreciate the congratulations and the opportunity to connect with people outside of my network. As I continue to advance my career, this award reminds me that I want my personal brand to always reflect the outstanding aspects of my career.

What’s your favorite thing about receiving this recognition?

Lauren: A great honor in receiving this recognition is the opportunity to further serve as a mentor and guide for emerging professionals early in their careers. As co-chair of the IAEE Program Committee, I have had the privilege of serving as a resource to early career professionals for two years. Receiving the Young Professional of the Year award has inspired me to reflect on the work I do with the IAEE Midwest Chapter and how I can increase my commitment to sharing valuable career insights with the next generation of professionals. I encourage them to join committees, participate in the organization’s extracurricular activities, and step out of their comfort zones to promote early career development.

Would you consider nominating someone for this recognition in the future? Why or why not?

Lauren: With the IAEE’s comprehensive awards program, extensive network, and numerous professional development opportunities, I will certainly be nominating someone for this recognition in the future. Young professionals may not realize the depth and knowledge of industry connections to which they have access. This award can be a powerful catalyst to jump-start their career trajectory, ultimately building long-term relationships and fostering growth within the industry. Nominating someone for this award is more than a simple recommendation; it demonstrates belief in the nominee’s potential, providing the support they need to explore new career paths. Winning this award is a valuable stepping stone in career advancement. I am extremely grateful to have been named Young Professional of the Year and hope that other aspiring professionals will benefit from what I have received.
