- The innocent driver is currently in critical condition.
Accountability is critical for everyone on the road, and law enforcement officers are no exception. Video captured by dashcams and body cameras has made it easier to hold authorities accountable. Now, new video of a speeding LAPD officer’s crash has some questioning what penalties might be imposed.

The incident occurred on June 23 just before 6 p.m. at the corner of Adams Avenue and Gramercy Place. Police were responding to a call from the local fire department about a man armed with a broken bottle. While the video from inside the patrol car did not provide GPS-indicated speeds, it was clear that the SUV was traveling much faster than all neighboring vehicles.

The police also sounded their sirens, but for some reason, the patrol car driver did not use the open right lane, but chose to use the opposite lane, trying to overtake a Toyota in the left lane. As the SUV approached the Toyota, the owner slowed down and turned left, seemingly unaware of the LAPD patrol car. Due to the high speed, the police did not have time to go around the Toyota and instead crashed directly into the driver’s side door of the Toyota.

The sedan spun clockwise and spun into traffic on the other side of the road. The police SUV lurched forward and struck a parked car. Body camera footage showed both officers exiting their vehicles and attempting to help the driver of the Toyota, who was apparently unconscious. Although the driver was placed in a medically induced coma upon arrival at the hospital, he is expected to survive, Los Angeles Police Chief Kelly Muniz told NBC Los Angeles.
The Reddit thread about the incident attracted many comments, including one from an EMS driver. “As a firefighter and paramedic, I have driven emergency vehicles for most of my life. I can’t believe how often the police act recklessly when driving to the scene. It is unsafe to operate in any way. This is ridiculous. The police department is 100% responsible. It is reckless,” said one person.
“Working in the emergency department, if you speed you won’t get to the scene faster, you might save 3 minutes. Now if you run a red light or drive like this, not only will you not be there, you will also result in more manpower being needed to handle the initial call and now the new call. It’s just stupid to drive like this. Hopefully the victim gets a good compensation and isn’t left with permanent injuries,” said another.
We want everyone to recover fully, regardless of training in any discipline.
