Lucid’s ambitions to compete with the likes of the Tesla Model Y are well known, but the electric car maker has also confirmed that it’s working on a third mystery model

  • Two of the new models will serve as competitors to Tesla Model Y and Model 3.
  • Details about the third model remain a mystery, but it won’t be a station wagon.
  • The automaker said it’s open to “rugged” styling for electric vehicles.

Lucid is developing a new model to compete with the Tesla Model Y and cost less than $50,000. However, this isn’t the only “entry-level” electric vehicle the company is developing, as the automaker has revealed that two more models are on the way.

CEO Peter Rawlinson has spoken publicly about Lucid’s planned Model Y competitor, but has said little about its other vehicles. In a recent interview at Monterey Car Week, Lucid Motors senior vice president of design and brand Derek Jenkins noted that the company’s “mid-size vehicle plan” will include “three models.”

The second new model is widely expected to be a sedan similar in size to the Tesla Model 3. In addition to competing with the most popular electric sedans, it will also have to compete with alternatives such as the Hyundai Ioniq 6, Polestar 2 and BMW i4. Then there’s the third model.

Jenkins didn’t say what form the model would take. However, he dispelled any hopes of it being a wagon or station wagon, saying the segment simply isn’t growing fast enough to justify developing one.

“We’ve explored it, of course,” he told CarBuzz. “The Air is a great format, but I don’t think we can prove it, at least not yet. Everyone, myself, all the engineers, are big fans of wagons. I’ve owned a lot of Audi wagons over the years, and I love these things. But you know what? Even in Europe, wagons are a dying segment. Enthusiasts think high-performance wagons are great, but there’s still no hard evidence that there’s growth. I don’t think we’re going to take that risk.”

One area Lucid does seem willing to venture into is the more rugged SUV space. “The off-road space is going to continue to change and evolve,” Jenkins said. “You get the benefits of a sleeker, more car-like vehicle, which gives you efficiencies, both spatial and aerodynamic efficiency, but you reinforce it and make it more rugged and durable.”

Does this mean Lucid could create something similar to the Rivian R3X? Hopefully.
