Mahindra has temporarily renamed its upcoming electric car BE 6e as BE 6 to deal with a trademark dispute with leading Indian airline IndiGo. The dispute stems from IndiGo’s established “6E” trademark, which is closely associated with its flight codes and branding. IndiGo’s parent company, InterGlobe Aviation, claimed that the word “6e” infringed on its trademarked flight code IndiGo 6E. To resolve the controversy, Mahindra has opted for a temporary rebranding of its electric SUV, changing its name from “BE 6e” to “BE 6”. However, the company remains resolute and intends to legally challenge InterGlobe Aviation’s objections in court. BE 6 is an important part of Mahindra’s Born Electric (BE) range and reflects its commitment to sustainable transportation.

Mahindra-Indigo trademark dispute
Mahindra argued that its application for the “BE 6e” trademark in the automotive sector has nothing to do with IndiGo’s exclusive “6E” brand. The company emphasized that the “BE” label, which symbolizes “Born Electric”, is registered under vehicle class 12, a dispute that appears to be unfounded given the unique nature of both industries. Additionally, the carmaker pointed out that Tata Motors had previously challenged IndiGo’s name, but IndiGo was allowed to retain its brand. Given this precedent, Mahindra believes InterGlobe Aviation’s current objections are inconsistent with its previous stance on similar issues.
“Our priority and focus is to ensure that our customers get a superior experience while bringing our products to the market,” an official press release from the homegrown carmaker said. “We do not want to deviate from our vision of democratizing electric mobility in India.” We also find it unseemly for two large Indian multinationals to engage in a distracting and unnecessary conflict, when in fact we should be supporting each other’s growth and expansion. Therefore, we decided to name our product “BE 6”.
