We got it right again, as we predicted, Mahindra has just launched the Thar ROXX at Rs 11.99 lakh (ex-showroom). This price is of course for the base MX1 petrol model, which is powered by a 2-litre, 4-cylinder mFalcon engine that produces 160 hp and 330 Nm of torque. It has a rear-wheel drive layout and a 6-speed manual gearbox. A similarly specced MX1 diesel is priced at Rs 13.99 lakh, ex-showroom.
The diesel engine – the tried and tested 2.2-litre 4-cylinder mHawk engine, which produces 150 hp and 330 Nm of torque. Mahindra has not yet announced the prices of the other variants of the Thar ROXX, but it is expected to be announced early tomorrow, when the actual launch will coincide with India’s Independence Day. It is only fitting that the prices of the entire range of Mahindra Thar ROXX models will be announced on India’s most important day.
Coming back to the question of the starting price of the Thar ROXX, it will surely create a stir as the new Mahindra SUV will prove to be a tempting offering for all those shopping for a range of compact SUVs like the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, Maruti Grand Vitara and Toyota HyRyder. Why even the buyers of the Mahindra XUV700 and Scorpio-N will be tempted to pay a deposit for the Thar ROXX as even the base MX1 has some serious equipment.
Imagine, the MX1 trim of the Mahindra Thar ROXX comes with a metal hardtop, LED headlamps, LED tail lamps, 18-inch steel wheels, touchscreen infotainment system, push button start, 6 airbags, ESP, ABS, brake locking differential, height-adjustable driver seat, fabric seats, rear AC vents, three-point seatbelts for all five passengers, 60:40 split rear seats, USB c port for charging and five-link suspension.
Mahindra will announce the complete specs sheet and prices of the other variants of the Thar ROXX tomorrow. The base variant will be well-specced and reasonably priced, so it will sell well in the future. The power and torque figures of the mFalcon turbo-petrol and mHawk turbo-diesel will also be improved on the higher trims. A 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive will also be available on the higher trims.
The seats will be covered in artificial leather and will come with ventilation. The seats are even expected to come with electric adjustment. The Thar ROXX promises to offer a superior cabin experience never before seen on a Thar in India, which is crucial as potential buyers are likely to compare the new Mahindra SUV with C-segment compact SUVs like the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta – both of which are highly fitted and finished.
The Mahindra Thar ROXX 5-door 4X4 SUV rides on a similar platform as the Scorpio-N but uses a ladder frame chassis that is one generation (4G) ahead of the former (3G). In terms of pricing, the Thar ROXX is actually cheaper than the Scorpio-N and this trend is likely to continue in most variants. We will know all this and more by early tomorrow. Stay tuned.
