In terms of size, the Mahindra Thar Roxx is comparable to the 2024 Force Gurkha 5-Door, and in terms of type, it is also comparable to the Maruti Suzuki Jimny
After single-handedly reinvigorating the lifestyle SUV segment in India, the Mahindra Thar is now making the genre more mainstream than before. How, you might ask. Mahindra has just launched the Thar Roxx in India, a 5-door version of the regular Thar, which was launched on August 15, 2020. The Mahindra Thar Roxx is available at an eye-watering entry price of Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-tax).
Mahindra Thar Roxx launched at Rs 12.99 lakh
Mahindra is known for its aggressive pricing strategy in the Indian SUV market. Products like the Thar RWD and Scorpio N are classic examples of aggressive pricing. The same strategy is also adopted for the Thar Roxx. With a starting price of Rs 12.99 lakh (ex-showroom), the Thar Roxx is a ‘real’ SUV at a very reasonable price.
Trim levels are yet to be announced as Mahindra has only revealed the base model at the launch. Like the 3-Door Thar, the Mahindra Thar Roxx is also offered in a low-end RWD variant to keep the price competitive. We would have liked a 4X4 variant in the base MX1 trim.
With the Thar Roxx, Mahindra has brought a completely new look. It comes with new LED projector headlamps. Buyers now do not have to spend money on aftermarket headlamps. It also comes with a new grille and thicker bumper.
On the sides, we get a little more length to accommodate the rear doors and more boot space. Unlike the Thar 3-Door, the Mahindra Thar Roxx gets a fixed metal roof and now introduces a new kink in the profile around the rear doors. This might be off-putting to some, especially in white and other lighter shades.
There are new alloy wheels which are more attractive. Mahindra has replaced the round rear wheel arches with squared ones. Both the front and rear wheel arch claddings now match which was not the case earlier.
Interior upgrades
One major upgrade we can notice in the Mahindra Thar Roxx is that its interiors are much superior compared to the Thar 3-Door. There is now a larger 10.2-inch free-standing infotainment screen which comes with wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. There is also a 10.2-inch fully digital instrument TFT screen with a large-screen navigation view feature.
Mahindra uses soft-touch materials on features and amenities like dashboard, front and rear armrests, rear AC vents, auto-dimming IRVM, interior-operated fuel cap, keyless entry, push-button start, etc. The biggest convenience upgrade is the rear doors for easy access to the second row of seats, and a larger boot.
On the safety front, the Thar Roxx comes with a camera-based Level 2 ADAS suite, similar to what we experienced in the Mahindra XUV3XO. All-four disc brakes, 6 airbags, TCS, TPMS and ESP are some other noteworthy safety features. To aid in off-road excursions, Mahindra has provided Crawl Smart Assist (CSA) and Intelligent Turning Assist (ITA) along with an electronically locking rear differential.
As far as the powertrains are concerned, the Mahindra Roxx continues to offer the same 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine and two diesel engine options, namely the 1.5L turbocharged diesel and the 2.2L turbocharged diesel engine options. Depending on the variant, the 2.0L petrol engine gets 160 bhp and 330 Nm in the base model state of tune. The 2.2L Gen 2 mHawk engine gets 150 bhp and 330 Nm in the base model state of tune.
