While the new Mahindra Thar Roxx is a direct competitor to off-roaders like the Maruti Suzuki Jimny and Force Gurkha five-door, it is a strong and premium alternative to the compact SUV segment in India, including the Creta. The two monikers belong to different segments but have a strong market foothold. The Thar was only available in a 3-door version in our market. With the launch of the Thar Roxx, the model has gained a new identity with more features and an eye-catching design. Here’s how Mahindra’s new 5-door SUV compares to the mid-size segment-leading Creta on various factors.

Mahindra Thar Roxx vs Hyundai Creta: Engine
Both the Thar Roxx and the Creta are available with either a petrol or diesel engine. The Mahindra SUV is offered with a single turbocharged petrol engine with two different power outputs, while the Hyundai SUV gets two petrol variants (a naturally aspirated and a turbocharged unit). Compared to the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine in the Creta, the Thar Roxx gets a larger 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with significantly more power and torque outputs of 17bhp and 127Nm respectively. The diesel unit in the Mahindra five-door model is also more powerful than the Creta’s diesel unit by 59bhp and 120Nm. The Thar SUV is offered in both RWD and 4WD variants, while the Hyundai model is front-wheel drive only.

Mahindra Thar Roxx vs Hyundai Creta: Features
While both SUVs are well-equipped, the Creta SUV takes a step further with features like rear window visor, sunglass holder and two-position rear seats. It also outdoes the Mahindra SUV with amenities like remote engine start, telescopic steering wheel adjustment, keyless entry and paddle shifters. However, the Thar outshines its rival with larger 19-inch alloy wheels. For reference, the Creta rides on 17-inch alloy wheels. In terms of safety, both models are almost identical with features like TPMS, ADAS and six airbags.

As shown in the table below, the Thar Roxx is 93 mm longer, 80 mm wider and 288 mm taller than the Creta SUV. Its wheelbase is also 240 mm longer.

Mahindra Thar Roxx vs Hyundai Creta: Prices
The Mahindra Thar Roxx is available in six core variants: MX1, MX3, MX5, AX3L, AX5L and AX7L. The Hyundai Creta, on the other hand, is available in seven different trim levels: E, EX, S, S(O), SX, SX Tech and SX(O). The Thar SUV is priced between Rs 12.99 lakh and Rs 20.49 lakh. These prices are only for the RWD variants. In comparison, the Creta SUV is priced between Rs 11 lakh and Rs 20.15 lakh.
